Oh, yeah. Those suck. Dixie got snake-bit this summer. Harder on her than me.
Water heater earlier this year, new water softener earlier this year.
Today, four new tires on the truck. No one ever says, “Hey, nice tires!” or “Awesome water heater!” But maybe I’ll start showing these things off when people come over, just to see if I can get some recognition for them.
Small potatoes compared to most of the above, but I went to get shoes re-soled - 280$!! No thanks
2 long term tenants left this year, 1 not so voluntarily and the other was just fine my keeping his security deposit rather than clean a god damn thing. Probably $15K to redo, refit both places, (now rented fingers crossed). My CPA gets annoyed when I tell him what I had to spend.
2018 has been a really good year in terms of spending. The only negatives were a dead battery that caused me to be towed to a garage, and a front disc brake job.
Our washing machine broke, and we needed a new one.
The guys from Sears deliver it, but can’t install it because the drain hose that came with it doesn’t want to connect properly to our plumbing.
So, the plumber comes the next week (because I do not know enough about plumbing to do it myself). Turns out the old machine’s drain hose was directly connected into the plumbing, which is not up to code, and these guys won’t do work that isn’t to code [1 hr of work minimum charge].
They come back the next week and splice a chunk of PVC into the giant metal drain pipe in the basement, and put a P-trap sticking out of that that the washing machine can drain into. [two guys for ~4 hours or so].
New washing machine: $650
Plumbing to get washing machine hooked up to code: $900
(As an aside, our basement floor is dirt and not particularly level, and the old machine was up on a pedestal. I wanted one for the new machine as well, just to get the thing off the ground. Do you know what they cost? $250 bucks! Almost half the cost of the machine for a metal and plastic box to set it upon. Screw that. A few recycled 2x4s and a trip to Lowes for a nice piece of plywood and I built my own platform for less than $50)
Had similar thing happen to me Labour Day weekend, in my 1980 Grew. I was able to limp it back to marina, apparently u-joints were done. Mechanic said I was lucky they didn’t blow and do a lot of damage. Only ended up being 1K.
Over the summer, I blew the steering cable out of my kids’ 1978 runabout, went to the marina to look for parts, guy at counter says “Boat repair day?” I answered “Every day is boat repair day!”
Anyway, they don’t make this style anymore so… new helm, new cable, new clevis kit, gas for 2 x hour long trips from the island into town equals over $500.
Not to mention, the money I had already sunk in to this boat:
$1300 for custom convertible sunbrella canvas top
$120 for new bilge pump, gas gauge, and horn.
$300 for new control panel, bluetooth stereo, LED speakers
$175 - 2-man Ski Tube, ropes, and pulley harness
Took my truck in for service inspection at the dealership, I also gave guy rusty bolt I found in a parking spot I use.
“Good news” the bolt is not from my truck and I only need back brakes It’ll be ~$550+tax. Great!.. make appointment for later in week. Come back… brake technician (not first guy) says front brakes need replacing too. How much? exactly same as back brakes ~$550+tax… make another appointment. Come back… made mistake front brakes are significantly more expensive but will honour quote. No problem.
1 hour later…Brake technician calls me in to garage, one sway bar linkage bolt is rusty and about to break and … the other is missing!? “Does it look like this?” I said handing him the bolt I found.
Anyway, the total bill with tax was close to $1400.
Ouch! How in the world did you do that!?
You’re lucky. When the main sewage tube from my house from the 70’s was blocked, I had it repaired for 2.500$, just to find out that the tube’s end wasn’t connected to the local sewage system but that everything ended up in a sewage pit. This pit however was just on the adjacent plot that I had recently sold, and the new owner wasn’t enthusiastic about my sh*t ending up in his garden, so I had to dump most of the newly installed pipes and drag ca. 150 meters of new tube 1 meter deep through rocks and bush to the next connection point. Cost me another 9.000$.
It just goes on and on. For this year alone: new roof and gutters, paint job (which includes siding repair), new carpeting for half the house, etc.
And despite looking for a couple months, haven’t found someone to come in with a load of fill dirt and a Bobcat to smooth out the front yard. It seems to be 1. Big job landscapers who don’t want our piddly little business. 2. Low end people who are basically mowers, etc. 3. People who seem skeevy, don’t call back, etc.
For 2017 … (don’t get me started).
Hot water heater a few days ago.
$700 for the unit.
$270 for the guy to unhook the old one and hook up the new one. Took him about 80 minutes. Labor cost was a little high, imo.
Two garage door openers - $500. Not too bad since I could do this myself.
Washer and dryer - $2K. Washer drum froze up, dryer was similar age so replaced it at the same time. Took advantage of the opportunity to switch to a gas dryer.
Complete HVAC replacement - $42K! Two separate 5 ton heat pumps with zoning systems, new condensers and air handlers, fixes to screwed up duct system. Significantly upgraded the system in terms of efficiency, but still…
I’m keeping an eye on the pool pump and filter, those are getting pretty old…
I’ve got some house windows with rotted frames. I can’t believe how much windows cost, from $1000-2000 each.
$12,000 to replace the tub with a walk-in shower. It’s just time, as we’re both over 70 now and my wife is subject to dizzy spells and general klutziness. Looks nice, has grab bars, and isn’t one of those cheap vinyl inserts. ::takes bullet out of pocket and bites it again::
Almost forgot: $650 to replace all the seals on the RV windows.
My husband told me a couple days ago he had a sore tooth. This started with a dentist visit that led to an endodontist visit that led to an oral surgeon visit. The tooth cannot be saved, so he’s scheduled for an extraction and post placement for an implant next week. We’re $600 in and $3,500 more to go right now. The cap for the post will cost more later, after the post sets.
