UN Resolutions: Double-Edged Sword?

Since the U.S. is pushing for Saddam to follow United Nations resolutions, how does this effect our policy internally or vis-a-vis Israel? I know some SDMB Middle East experts could quote a dozen or so UN resolutions that the US either vetoed or Israel is in violation of.

Given our propensity to veto resolutions against Israel, why shouldn’t France, Russia, or China do the same to us when we seek authorization to invade Iraq? It seems to me that the UN must be laughing about GWB coming in and showing reverence to UN resolutions. I’m not defending Saddam, by the way. I think he may well attempt to strike the U.S., but the quesion remains.

Does the U.S. look hypocritical pushing for a strict interpretation of the Iraqi UN mandates, while vetoing or ignoring others?
