Uncle John's Bathroom Reader article search.

Hope the title wasn’t too vague. Anyway, I’m trying to find the full article I read in one of the editions about the Wizard of Oz.

In it, they either worte themselves or reprinted a previous article about the W of Oz and how each character represented a different sub-culture or class in the '20’s. (Kansas being a Dust Bowl, Tin Man being the factories, Man Behind Curtain and Oz being FDR and D.C. respectively)

Does anyone know which edition this was in or if it’s anywhere online? Been wondering for years and finally gave in to you fine Dopers to help me out.

Sorta.

  1. I don’t know where Uncle John’s version of the “Oz”=“Populist allegory” essay is, but our perfect master will give you the true straight dope on it here, with links to other repudiations of the theory.

  2. You’re misremembering one bit which might be hampering your search. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was published in 1900. The Wiz couldn’t be FDR, as FDR was like, 12 at the time!

This, and other interpretations, are covered by Cecil His Own Self in Is " The Wizard of Oz" a satire of the French Revolution?

I believe it was in the first edition.

Is this what you’re looking for?

Yup, that’s the one I was thinking of. Thanks.

(I’ve never heard of it being about the French Rev. But thanks for the answers)
