Underground

We know Bin Laden is “underground”; cannot be found.
Abbie Hoffman went underground in the 70;s.
How EASY is it to go and not be found when the government is looking for you?

There’s a difference between someone like you or I going “underground” versus someone like Bin Laden going underground. He is part of a large organization which is spread out throughout a mainly rural country… a country with lots of places for someone like him to hide. He can travel from follower to follower… never spending more than a day or two in one place…

I don’t think you or I would be able to do that… although I’m sure we could allude capture for a while. The problem is that at some point we would try and contact a loved one and once we did that the authorities could home in on our location. Abbey Hoffman also had a large number of friends who would harbor him…

He came to my college in the early 80’s to speak. There was a great disinterest; we were a new generation and didn’t know who the @!#?@! he was.

I did read up on him, noting his opinion not to trust anyone over 30.

When he committed suicide in 1989 at age 52, I commented to my workmates that Hoffman couldn’t trust himself anymore. I got a good laugh.

What I also meant was, how easy is it for someone going underground to becoem another person: re: s.s.number, identity.
I know it helps to have comrads help you: Abbie regularly wrote back and forth with his wife Anita.
