-Underwater Music-

    • Do any regular musical instruments work underwater?
    • Are there any special instruments for playing underwater? - MC

Well I know there is a Trumpet fish- does that count?

Thinking of starting the first underwater heavy-metal band?

I think if you did an experiment like that with your electric bass guitar, you would be a prime candidate for the 2000 Darwin awards.

Seriously, what do you mean by regular instruments? Regular instruments you would find in a garage band or something more along the lines of the New York Symphony?

For the typical garage band (usually guitars, keyboard and drums). An acoustic guitar should work, assuming it was made of platic or fiberglass. Drums would work, too, if they were made of water-proof materials. Of course, your drum solo is going to go as fast as molases on a cold day since the water is going to considerably slow down your arm movement.

Of course, then they are going to have to be tuned different since the resonance of these items is going to be affected greatly by the density of the water. Also I think they would not resonate as long therefore playing a whole note in four-four time could take some doing.

Who are you going to get to sing lead vocals for this band? Aquaman?

/hijack – The U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama has a dive tank as a part of the Space Camp facilities there. It is about 30 feet tall and is all above ground with portholes for people to gawk at the divers. While diving there, the staff had placed stereo speakers against the outside of the portholes. The radio music could be heard quite well underwater from inside the tank. I guess they had grown tired of listening to the “blub blub blub” of bubbles while cleaning the tank… /hijack
