UnF*ing Believable (not really, but..)

Why are you so convinced that anybody cares?

Thank you for another stunning revelation. If I think you sound like a jerk, I’m going to say so if it’s all the same to you.

I did read the thread. I just don’t happen to subscribe to this “tagging is ok if it’s a mini-mall” line of thinking.

Great, now point out where I said such a thing.

And tell me where I said that, too. I was asked if I would like to live in a city with tagging. I said “yes”. I do live in a city with heavy tagging, and it brings me delight. I don’t care if you freak out over your wall. If you lived here, your head would explode. But you don’t live here. And how you react to things is your problem.

And thats what makes America great. You can live where you live and enjoy stewardship over old walls. And I can live where I live and enjoy the fruits of a great urban art comptetition.

I don’t care if someone has reproduced Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” in Plasti-kote if they don’t have permission from the owner of the property that they’ve painted it on. It’s still disrespectful of other people and just wrong.

I have the impression that most of those who think drawing on other people’s property (or public property) is art, are people who don’t have any property. If you want to say that persons’ rights are more important than property rights, then you should know that most property represents a lot of work by a PERSON. I personally put in a great deal of sweat equity and thought and working 8 hours a day at a job I don’t enjoy in order to have my house look a certain way. It does not need to be annotated by some nut with a spray can. The people down the street painted their wall white, and yesterday someone drew a black line down the length of the wall. Not even a straight line. Just a black squiggle. This is art? This is self expression? This is cool? Not really. this is vandalism. Lock the bastard up. He has violated the PEOPLE rights of the PEOPLE whose wall it is. Property rights are not different from people’s rights.

I agree with this sentiment. Tagging is a visual assault on all who are forced to look at it. In other words, why should the public at large be notified that Crazy Joe is a wuss and a target?

On the other hand, when I’ve seen fully thought out and artistically done graffiti, I’ve usually thought it was cool. For some reason, I only seem to see that type of work from trains, perhaps because the graffiti artists are less apt to be hassled in rail yards / beds than they would on a sidewalk.

You think it’s perfectly legit for me to be upset about my personal property, yet if someone is upset about tagging on a mini-mall, they’re overreacting. Maybe you don’t think tagging on a mini-mall is “ok”, but you definitely think it’s “more ok.” I disagree. Strongly.

I just went back and reread all your posts in this thread, and everything you’ve said indicates that you think tagging is not only ok, but you actually like it. Did I misread you?

I don’t think it’s okay, at least not on non-abandon property. But I do like it.
