Unions in America: When did the narrative change?

Does anyone cross the line in that video? I didn’t see any–but videos overheat my laptop and I had to stop about a minute short…

It is funny how people will try to paint you as anti-union if you don’t agree with them 100%

The entire point of a picket line is to intimidate, that is their point. (note a picket line != picketing)

Outside of Lance Armstrong’s irrational standard of proof there is no rational reason to think they are not about intimidation.

My main problem with unions these days is they are more about maintaining the status quo, they are about protecting the established interests over those of the workers.

As an example this is why the nice people who drive you to the airport here in Seattle make a whole whopping 10 cents over minimum wage while being forced to still pay Teamster dues.

Most of the job protections they have gained in the past several years has been due to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s regulations.

This is my problem with Unions, they protect themselves at the costs of the workers, they are sucking money away from the workers and the value they are returning is minimal.

The workers traded one tyrant for another. Just because unions did great things in the past doesn’t give them the right to be just as evil today.

Note that the story I posted as evidence of violence was one Union getting violent because they hired workers from another Union, it was not a Union busting situation.

No, not at all, it was a teacher strike and there was no one passing the line.

To put it in context that strike was over a proposed 1.35% reduction in pay…while other state workers were taking double digit cuts and the state was cutting basic health and safety programs.

There were no replacement workers, the State had a budget issue and the voters had limited their ability to raise taxes.

Bullshit. Complete bullshit.

I think we’ve established whose standards of proof are rational here.

Then what do you think the goal of a picket line is?

What is the point of a picket line?

Can you add anything to the debate or is your position so weak that being contrarian your only viable tactic?

Cites…provide cites.

To publicly shame an employer and make people aware the union has a dispute with the employer. It’s a form of protest. You know, like when the Tea Party of whoever goes out and marches with signs.

You’re in no position to say any of that.

Here is a description of picketing for those who never seem to have learned it:

Once again…quit shifting the goalpost you are talking about Informational picketing which can be but does not have to be intimidation. (Although it can be e.g. westboro baptist church)

Show me a picket line that was not done with intent to intimidate.

Except when every link listed, you heartily shout down that’s just 534 incidents, now prove all the rest are…

Really, you are kind of going over the top here with your argument.

And from your cite

It may be useful to review your materials before using them as “proof”

I have seen pickets that are much less abusive than the corridor of shame that some people form outside of planned parenthood clinics.

And a kitten is softer than a bicycle…what is the relation between the two you are inferring?

I did review it.

I stand by my statement. Your statement that “The entire point of a picket line is to intimidate, that is their point” is false.

Someone posted 534 links? Or a list of 534 incidents? Out of how many?

Not even close. I couldn’t be more right. Did you read the thread, carefully?

Informational picketing is picketing.

Please stop this nonsense. You made another wild statement you can’t back up.

Yes there is a need to cite a claim you make. Particularly when it’s made against other people by way of putting words in their mouth. You’re just flat full of shit.

I can back it up with personal experience. A company I once worked for was picketed by a local union. They would stand at the exit of the parking lot and try to sell their service. If you waved them off there was another person with a clipboard ahead of the first person who would step forward and take down your license plate number.

These clowns wanted to unionize a business losing money like it was water over Niagara Falls. We had an in-house employee committee that took care of grievances. It cost us nothing and was quite effective.

I never experienced any “shunning” from my teachers after that day. I was stunned 12 years later when the teacher who crossed the line said that. She was still upset over the way she was treated, but you are correct in that after that day, I never suffered a negative moment for crossing the picket line.

A bus driver and teachers aren’t going to openly, publicly mock a student.* I think they probably thought you were cute and misguided. I think the mocking laughter you report was an expression of something wry rather than mocking. I suspect, actually, that it was a wry sympathy. Not a wonderful attitude to be the object of–but not mockery.

Since you posted this, I’ve sincerely thought if I may have been mistaken. I’m convinced I wasn’t. They intimidated my sister. She ran crying back to her seat. No sympathy from a bus driver or a teacher. He still had that grin on his face after he saw her crying.

As I said, I was a good student and was respected by the teachers (as far as that can happen). When the picketing teachers were told it was me, they stopped the cat calls, and I didn’t get the sign treatment pushing me back on the bus. Just the football coach (who in two years was my high school football coach; not a word was ever said) making the comment about my future and how he wouldn’t lay a hand on me (the implicit threat being that since I was disobeying him I was subject to a paddling, which was legal at the time).

In retrospect: The teachers at my school acted semi-okay after they knew it was me. At my sister’s school, none did. The bus driver was an asshole the whole time. But what if it was a C student? Is it okay to mock a kid for going to school?
