Unique restaurants in NY that focus on sustainability/local produce etc.

My wife and I will be going up to New York soon, and I’m trying to figure out where we might eat. We are pretty picky about food, and we like to eat at places with a message. For example, one of our favorite restaurants in DC is Founding Farmers, which not only serves delicious food but also focuses on sustainability.

I’m looking for suggestions for restaurants that serve real food, doesn’t necessarily matter if it’s organic, but it’s good if there is a serious effort toward sustainability, using local produce, etc. It’s a plus if it has character.

In DC it’s possible to find some places that fit this bill and aren’t too expensive. That’s ideally what we’re looking for. Nothing that we’ll have to dress up for.

Check out Slow Food NYC’s Snail of Approval awardees.

Hearth (which is on the list linked to above) is out of the way but has an excellent wine list, if that’s a deciding factor.

Thanks, folks. I’m looking through that website right now.

Also wanted to mention that we’ll be looking for the best restaurants in Chinatown as far as some authentic Chinese (even Taiwanese?) fare, and we’re also interested in knowing if there are good street vendors.

It’s on the list linked to above, but one is Blue Hill Restaurant. Three stars from the New York Times.
