Incorrect. We’ve also allowed a few people to enrich themselves in the process.
Looks to me like the US would get absolutely nothing out of that deal except the hell out of there.
Which may well, given the rest of this situation, be the best we can get.
If Iran makes a deal, the first point should state that if Trump lies about it, any of it, the deal is off. Don’t let him get away with gaslighting MAGA about how much he “won”.
Yeah, they wont do that and of course Iran will claim they won.
And this is only a temporary deal.
So much winning! On both sides. I’m getting tired of it.
I see that Trump’s ceasefire is going well …
US Intel says Iran can last for several months under the blockade, and has retained most of their missile equipment:
When the US wanders away without doing more than blowing shit up then Iran does win. No claiming necessary.
ugh - this was the best source I could find.
Two assholes not seeing eye to eye.
Are you saying the two war masterminds didn’t have a plan before they launched this war? You’d think they would’ve came up with a game plan before they started this quagmire, I mean war.
The “plan” was the same as it always was:
- Bomb the country
- The people will welcome us as saviors
- Steal the oil
Here is something the Hegseth fool should read:
Of course he won’t read it, and he would not believe it if he did, even assuming he is able to understand it. But the fact remains: the author is right, Hegseth is a fool.
Would be even better if the Supreme Ineptstein Orange-Utan (SIOU) read it. Same caveats as before would apply. Of course.
Excellent article. Remind me of this blog post by a historian I read a while ago on the military failures of fascism (which is looking more relevant by the day unfortunately).
But war, war is something fascists value intensely because the beating heart of fascist ideology is a desire to prove heroic masculinity in the crucible of violent conflict (arising out of deep insecurity, generally). Or as Eco puts it, “For Ur-Fascism there is no struggle for life, but, rather, life is lived for struggle…life is permanent warfare” and as a result, “everyone is educated to become a hero.”2 Being good at war is fundamentally central to fascism in nearly all of its forms – indeed, I’d argue nothing is so central. Consequently, there is real value in showing that fascism is, in fact, bad at war, which it is.
And well, looking at Trump’s performance in Iran ,“bad at war” is a fair characterization.
All the many many times the USA has been accused of stealing oil-“no blood for oil”- are there any recent examples where it really happened? The USA has our own oil, we dont need to steal it.
Have you ever met a rich person? Such people are often (not always!) greedy, and acquisitive. There is a certain type of person, distressingly common among high-earning corporate types, where “I have enough” is not a sentiment they understand.
Chevron is now extracting oil from Venezuela, and shipping it to it’s oil refinery in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Chevron now imports the equivalent of 250,000 barrels of Venezuelan crude oil per day, on average, and plans to up this to 400,000 barrels per day.
At $100 USD per barrel, that’s $40 million per day. How much of that is the Venezuelan government getting do you suppose?
Chevron has been extracting oil from Venezuela for roughly a century. Chevron was exporting a third of Venezuela’s oil under Maduro and was frequently accused of propping up his regime under waivers granted by the Biden administration. They recently (like literally last month) signed a deal where the traded some of their interests in natural gas to the Venezuelan government in exchange for a larger share in Venezuela’s crude industry.
I am 100% certain they made the best deal they could financially because that is what they care about. I am also sure they are as pleased as punch to take advantage of chaos in Venezuela to strike a better deal. But they’d do the same thing if some other anti-US coup had happened - they are utterly amoral and follow the dollars like most big multinationals. CEO Mike Wirth and Trump are sucking up to each other, but at the end of the day this is just business as usual not a sudden new exploitation.
I forgot- exactly when did we invade Venezuela? And yes, it is being paid for- at a great rate of course.
Right.
In any case-
in recent memory, all the times the US has been accused of invading to steal oil- we havent. So, this is unlikely.
US, Iran close to a deal to end war, official says
President Trump said Saturday that a deal to end the war with Iran would be announced “shortly” and that the “final aspects” are currently being negotiated.
The big picture: Trump’s comments came after separate calls with Arab and Muslim leaders and with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This is the firmest statement the president has made that he is prepared to agree to the memorandum of understanding being negotiated with Iran.
- A U.S. official briefed on the negotiations told Axios the deal was nearly finished but that there were still gaps on the “wording” of several points.
Reality check: Trump and his advisers thought they were close to a deal several times at earlier stages in the war, but none materialized.
Breaking it down: The deal is designed to end the war, gradually open the Strait of Hormuz, and launch at least 30 days of more detailed negotiations on issues including Iran’s nuclear program.
