University of Alabama

Hello SDMB. I post to you once again.

I recently asked for advice career-wise, got some great answers, and have been working on making the best decision for my situation. I have pretty much decided, and set my mind to, attending graduate school for Library Sciences. This meant doing fun research and such, but now, I’m narrowing down the options (with a week left in junior year of undergrad, what else could I be doing?)…

I have been looking into the University of Alabama. It would be a distance program, but I would like to hear opinions on the university as well. What should I know about UA? What should I expect when I’m down there (the distance program requires a week or so on campus at the beginning)? What should I expect in a distance program? (this one is of lesser importance, as my wife is currently finishing a Master’s in Criminology from Cincinnati and is a completely distance learning program - we have some expectations - but still, I’ll ask)

What about a MLS? I know there are a few librarians on the boards, hopefully they can tell me. My only experience with the MLS program was through Kent State when I was in high school. OPLIN did a distance learning program and my mother (the school librarian) wanted to work toward it. I had to go to her class and help because they had never used the video-conferencing equip. before and I had. Also, she hadn’t been in a college classroom in a while, so I helped her with proofreading papers and such. This was 6 years ago. What has changed? Have things changed? Oh, how I wish I knew more ahead of time.

Thank you to any dopers who respond. I appreciate any help I can get in preparing to apply (which means gathering information such as I am now)…
