University of Phoenix

I think my last 30 hours in undergrad had to be from the same school to get the degree. That plan probably wouldn’t work.

The same as Strayer University.

If you need a credential - in other words, you need a BS or BA to get a job, or a hike in pay, it might be fine. A perfunctory box to be checked, UofP should work fine.

I agree that UofP is one of the more reputable for-profits, but it has some pretty ugly issues, like their grad rate and their financial aid issues. And they’re one of the better ones out there.

I agree that the for-profit motivation means that the people recruiting you are working on commission. They’re not concerned about whether this is the best fit for you, and they may stretch the truth or outright lie to get your signature. Of course, they wouldn’t be in business if they told a third of their applicants that it wasn’t the right school for them.

One of my students is a professor at UofP and he’s enrolled in our PhD program. Because he knows the brand is better. But certainly, there’s a population that could really benefit from the convenience. Military folk, for instance.

A friend of mine teaches statistics at UoP. I know she takes it really seriously and does the best she can. I had a lot of problems with stats myself and she helped me out a few times - she definitely knows what she’s doing and is a good teacher.

But it sounds like her students are a bunch of dingbats, frankly. She posts anecdotes in her blog to vent and it’s kind of shocking (and funny).

I’m in my third class, and two of my three professors have been PhDs, and they all know their stuff. The current one, in particular, has very high standards. This is no day at the beach.
