University sabbaticals: how, what, when?

What are the specifics re: sabbaticals? Must one be a full professor? Is there a quid pro quo, or a paid vacation?

Does one draw a full salary? Is it really a research-driven hiatus?

How often may one take sabbatical? Are they moving toward obsolescence?

Thanks.

At my university, faculoty are eligible for sabbaticals once every eight years. Yeah, In know, but they’re cheap like that, pretending a sabbatical means you have to work seven yers to get a sabbatical.

And they’re competivitve , so if you say you want to stroll along the beach for a few months, you might as well not apply. I don[t know the figures, but lots of faculty apply and get shot down.

I’ve onoy had one, when I was an associate professor, and I had a choice: I could get a semester off at full pay, or a whole year off at half pay. Everybody but the independently wealthy chooses the half-year, and ends up without too much to show for it, IMO. I used mine to write a book that would Have been much more thorough if I had just a little more time. Aside from not having to teach, that was one of the hardest semesters I’ve ever worked.
