UNregistering to Vote

How long do you stay registered to vote? I can’t remember when I actually registered, it’s been a long time.

I just returned from voting and saw my ex-wife’s name on the list near mine. I also receive a voter registration card in her name here. She hasn’t lived here in almost 5 years.

I can see a couple of ways to abuse this. I could have a lady friend vote in her place since they didn’t ask me for any further ID other than the card. Or if I had forwarded the card to my ex, as I do with other mail that comes here in her name, she could have voted in twice if she were in the area by voting absentee in her home area and directly here.

I don’t suppose it would happen often, but it does seem possible. And I wonder how many others are on more than one registration list just because they don’t get removed.

How are names suppose to be removed from the list when people move away?

Jim

I believe you are supposed to notify your old registrar of voters. I seem to remember on the CA voter registration material there was a place to indicate your old address. Presumably within CA they would update the roles.

Try this: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/cgi-bin/cqcgi?CQ_SESSION_KEY=ZLKLEJBEXLEP&CQ_QUERY_HANDLE=125378&CQ_CUR_DOCUMENT=37&CQ_TLO_DOC_TEXT=YES

In California, purging the voting rolls of “deadwood” is a hot button issue. No county registrar really wants to do it.

I’m sure my father, who passed away on 9/30 will remain on the rolls for quite a while.

Otto, the link you provided confirmed what I experienced and that is that with the card and a matching name on the list all that you need to do is sign in, no further ID is required.

gazpacho, I’m reasonably sure my ex voted in Ca. in the 2000 general election, so I guess they don’t tell other states about the new registration. Since the lists are maintained at a county level, I wonder if they even tell other counties about a new registration.

So, the voters themselves are the ones that are suppose to remove themselves from the lists? Wonder how many lists my name is on since I’ve never removed my name from a voter list that I know of.
