Unregulated intersections in Russia

Like most people, I spent my Saturday night checking out random cameras on the Internet. Most are security and traffic cams.

I found this one to be especially interesting. It looks pretty benign at the moment, but at 4:30am Pacific time, 3:30pm St. Petersburg time, it looked like the busiest of big city streets; traffic stacked up in every direction and a stready flow of pedestrians. And yet, there doesn’t seem to be any sort of traffic light system, or even lines on the pavement. People just zoom through at their own discretion.

So, I’ll turn my fascination into a GQ by asking, is this common in Russia? Other countries? Are people killed constantly at these intersections, or does it turn out that signals are overrated?

There are traffic lights there, and are visible at the moment (which I think is midnight local time)

:smack: I see it now, of course. Judging by the way people were driving earlier, the signal was either being semi-ignored, or the power to the signal was out.

I’ll go with the power being out, since it absolves me of any lapse in attention to detail.
