Not really. All the mafia sites (including MafiaScum and other non-Dope affiliated boards) are pretty much newbie friendly. Although, since MafiaScum is one of the largest, they might have more newbie oriented games.
Not at all. My first game was probably the most complex game the Dope affiliates ran up to that point. (Arkham Asylum run by the aforementioned Roosh along with Diomedes/Boozahol Squid.) Everyone’s got to start somewhere and the veterans on the whole are a friendly and helpful lot. Granted, there are occasionally much more simple and more newbie friendly games run, but really unless you’re easily intimidated, even a complex game won’t be too bad. (Besides, what’s better than a trial by fire to truly hone your mafia skills.)
Usually it’s better not to have this, since role assignments are meant to be random, but it would depend on who the person running the game is. Frequently a better choice is to just ask the mod for strategies on how to run a role. They should be able to give you some ideas without giving you any spoilers.
Another good way to learn strategies is to watch games spoiled. It gives you insight into motivations of various players, and you can read the critiques that your fellow spoiled give on current strategies various players are using. You’ll get some of that in unspoiled discussion threads like this one, but the discussions here are conducted by people who don’t know the truth of what’s going on, or might know the truth if they’re spoiled, but naturally have to hedge their comments so as not to inadvertently reveal that they have perfect information.
I’ve found it pretty user friendly for newbs. And “Don’t lynch me, I’m just a newb, it’s my first day” can sometimes work to your advantage like when you get put in the role of necromancer on your first go out. ::evil laughter::

But due to the fact that Idle’s board was formed purely for the ability to run Mafia games slightly different from the way they are run here, and to provide more opportunities for people to run them, Idle’s board has pretty much been given a pass in practice of the law, if not exactly the letter. Idlemafia games get advertised here, and SD games get advertised over there.
Maybe I’ll try to get in the next game here. I’ve a learning curve problem at any new forum; or rather need to post a while so other forum members learn I’m not really obnoxious: just quirky with poor social skills. :smack:
Before I started playing mafia, I read over a few of the old mafia Dope games first, and then I started to play- and I was still a bit intimidated, but you really don’t have to worry too much if you can understand how to play logically and not go all crazy. So just wait for a game to open up, and make sure it’s nothing too crazy or wild, and go for it!
Most likely going into lylo tomorrow, unless Alka can pull some magic out of his hat. This game is looking very interesting, even from the peanut gallery.
