How man, how could I have forgotten those. The first is linked to my first boy crush, the second is one of my favorite western. Guess was thinking of pure breed revenge movies, not movies from another genre that were revenge movies too.
I know the feeling. There are a couple on the tip of my tongue I can’t quite name.
Rocky IV
Braveheart
Death Wish
High Plains Drifter
Hit Man, the blaxploitation remake of Get Carter with Bernie Casey.
I Spit on Your Grave (aka Day of the Woman)
Ms. 45
“Coffy” starring Pam Grier – a tough woman takes revenge on a sadistic prison guard. Also, toss in “Jackie Brown” – it ends in the ultimate take-down ever commmitted to celluloid aside from “White Lightning” or “Death Proof.”
Is the OP actually going to watch all these movies? That’s like a year of straight movie-watching for a normal person, I’d expect!
Speaking of remakes, I’ve seen the trailer for Dwayne Johnson’s new movie Faster. Judging from the trailer, it might be another Get Carter remake.
I only count thirty-five movies. That’s just a busy week.
“Hello. My name is…”
While it isn’t the central plot of the movie, *the Princess Bride *features the best unstoppable revenge ever put to screen.
Or a busy few days! I’ve only seen six or seven movies in a row, and I’m not a professional, just someone who likes movies.
Neither of those is really about vengeance. Rocky wants to get back for Apollo Creed, but it’s made clear national pride is his main motive. And William Wallace is after independence for Scotland, any vengeance he takes along the way is secondary to that goal.
Pumpkinhead. That’s about vengeance. And features an unstoppable force.
Oldboy is about unstoppable revenge.
For the other guy.
Really? This is kind of a change from the comics, then.
Sure, he won’t kill innocents - but he gets to decide who’s ‘innocent’…and seems to have decided that means not killing kids, and that’s about it.
Non-movie-related Punisher jackholery under cut:
There was a scene in the Anti-Venom series, where Frank and Eddie were both going after the same bad guy, so they decided to team up.
The alliance ended when the bad guy took a hostage - a woman known to both of them, who was an addict.
Eddie’s reaction: ‘Oops, better regroup!’
Frank’s reaction: ‘Screw her, justice don’t stop for addicts.’
Eddie’s reaction to Frank’s reaction: ‘I’m gonna eat your brains!’
I may be paraphrasing a touch. But, Frank did make it clear that not only would he not shed a tear if the bad guy cacked her, he’d shoot through her if it came to that.
Ocean’s Eleven is a great revenge film.
High Plains Drifter.
Point Blank is the better movie – both are based on the first Parker novel, The Hunter, by Richard Stark (a Donald E. Westlake pseudonym).
“Nevada Smith:” Steve McQueen seeks revenge against a trio of low-lifes (Karl Malden, Martin Landeau, and (I think) Arthur Kennedy) who murdered his parents just for shits and giggles. Great three-part revenge story!
The Last of the Mohicans
“When the Grey Hair is dead, Magua will eat his heart. Before he dies, Magua will put his children under the knife, so the Grey Hair will know his seed is wiped out forever”
Ran The whole disaster was put in motion by Lady Sué to avenge the destruction of her family’s castle.
Isnt it George Kennedy?
Every actor even considered a marginal action star has one of these.
Vin Diesel has A Man Apart
The Rock has Fast and The Rundown to an extent
Swayze has Road House which winds up being about revenge.
Damon has the Bourne sequels which are also at least partially about revenge.
Statham has at least a couple but Death Race and Crank come to mind.
JCVD has Double Impact, Death Warrant, and others.
Almost every story in Sin City is about revenge but especially Marv’s.
Stallone has a few that could loosely fit this label, films that don’t stand out about revenge but end up that way like Rocky III, Rocky IV, Rocky V, Tango and Cash, etc.
Arnold has Commando, Total Recall, Eraser, The 6th Day, Collateral Damage, and probably others.
And Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin made enough of these movies to keep John Cena working in crappy action moves forever.
Even if they aren’t noteworthy there are tons of direct-to-DVD sequels and "original"s.
Pickers of nits. The goals of both protagonists morph over the course of each film. So what? Or we can be immovable purists; that’s fun.
