Unstoppable Revenge Films

Fatal Attraction. Streep is out to get Douglas’s ass.

The Running Man

Glenn Close.

Hijack: Are there any movies that point up the moral of Buddhism, history and common sense, to wit, that revenge simply begets more revenge?

The Matrix sequels
Groundhog Day

Although I don’t think those are what you mean as they are more about pseudo-Buddhist morals than about revenge or lack thereof.

The Duellists

How about “Shoot Em Up” with Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti?

Two by the Japanese irector Masaki Kobayashi, too often overshadowed by Kurosawa:

In Harakiri, an old ronin shows up at the house of a samurai clan, threatening to commit suicide if they don’t give him a hand-out. They call his bluff, and tell him about the previous ronin whose bluff they’d called, and had been made to commit suicide painfully with a bamboo knife. The ronin announces that that had been is son-in-law, and proceeds to tear the place apart.

In Samurai Rebellion, the Shogun jerks his loyal samurai until the breaking point. It’s a pretty good illustratin of how loyalty has to be a two-way street.

As far as “revenge against society as a whole,” no example makes a better story than Carl Panzram’s. James Woods was miscast in a misfire that really doesn’t capture the book.

No movies about any of them that I could find, but the Royal Navy has had 13 ships named “Revenge” between 1577 and 1995. Those guys sure can nurse a grudge.

One that i like is a relatively unknown film by British director Shane Meadows. It’s called Dead Man’s Shoes, and stars Paddy Considine as the avenger.

Sure. Off the top of my head?

The Prestige
The War of the Roses
Tin Men
Changing Lanes

True Grit.

Surprised it hasn’t been mentioned, yet.

Sure, the aforementioned Death Sentence.

Has Max Payne been mentioned yet?

I think its a bit different but its close enough, the bedford incident comes to mind.

Declan

This reminded me of one of the great revenge stories of Japan, the Forty-Seven Ronin. It’s been made into a movie several times, but I’ve never seen any. Keanu Reeves is apparently starring in a new version coming out next year ("I know kenjutsu!" “Show me.”).

Once Upon a Time in the West.

The Boondock Saints
The Boondock Saints 2: All Saint’s Day
Leon (The Professional) “For… Mathilda!”
Demolition Man
Kick-Ass (specifically Hit Girl towards the end)

Walking Tall.

CMC fnord!

Point Blank is an incredible movie, payback is very much in its shadow.
Also another vote for First Blood.

Steven Seagal has a bunch, notably Hard to Kill.

Swayze also had Next of Kin.

Kind Hearts and Coronets.
