Unusual sports team names

That’ll do, pig*, that’ll do.

*In the Scots sense of “an earthenware container”, of course.

For the OP, there was another Packers, this one in Kansas City of the Federal League (US 3rd professional baseball league, circa 1913-15.

Actually, I find the whole league kind of interesting from a nickname pov

Chicago Whales - Didn’t know there were whales in the Great Lakes
St. Louis Terriers - woof
Pittsburgh Rebels - Above the Mason-Dixon Line, so not sure what “rebels” referred to.
Kansas City Packers
Newark Peppers
Buffalo Blues
Brooklyn Tip-Tops - owned by the Ward Brothers, makers of Tip-Top Bread
Baltimore Terrapins

Also, not mentioned:

Wheeling Nailers (minor league hockey team)

I knew that. I was just wondering if after that they called them the Cardinals, the bird, for a short time before they changed it to just Cardinal, the color.

You know what? I’m just going to follow this up myself.

College sports team nicknames beginning with “Fighting”[ul][li]Fighting Camels - Campbell []Fighting Christians - Elon University (until 1999 - then the more boring “Phoenixes”)[]Fighting Illini - Illinois []Fighting Irish - Notre Dame [] Fighting Knights - Lynn[]Fighting Leathernecks - Western Illinois men’s teams []Fighting Scots - seven schools:
[]Edinboro[]Gordon[]Macalester[]McHenry County College[]Monmouth College[]Ohio Valley[]Wooster[/ul][]Fighting Sioux - North Dakota
[/li]
Virginia Tech Fightin’ Gobblers.
Sadly, the team name was changed to Hokies sometime in the 80s.
Both team names are rare.

Does any other team have a turkey mascot?

I should have added the Railhawk is not a real bird, it was a made up name for the team.
