To be honest, I’m not that familiar with the term. I’ve just heard it in more polite contexts where something like “cam ho” would not be acceptable, including some of the women who do that sort of thing using the term to describe themselves.
I assume that if the women themselves use the term to describe what they do in polite company, then it must not be too offensive.
This is getting to be a bit of a hijack though.

I know more than a few people who are or have been adult content creators and I’ve never heard that term before and I’m certain that none of them would appreciate it. How many adult content creators do you personally know who use that term? Your logic is wrong anyway.

I joined a new gym 15 years ago or so. I started to notice a tall, blonde, attractive woman, who was always working out in full makeup. She looked vaguely familiar. I finally asked someone if they knew who she was, and they said “On, that’s Wifey.” I looked her up, and she was a pioneer in the early internet porn business. We ended up chatting quite a bit. Pretty surreal, actually.
Decades ago a “calll girl” lived in my condo complex. I always thought of her as the Suzanne Somers character from American Graffiiti. She drove a similar car. Nice, friendly lady.

I’ll note that a couple of people I follow on Instagram have OnlyFans accounts, and they, themselves, refer to themselves as “mattress actresses.” That said, it wouldn’t surprise me that some people do find that term offensive.

ISTM that may be also a matter of, like “seggs” and “pew pew”, making a habit of avoiding the straight terms to stay on the good side of filters. I expect here at SDMB we can confidently just say “porn actress/camgirl”.
I just want to say that even after reading all that, when I heard “mattress actress” I was thinking, “Wait, I don’t remember anyone selling mattresses in the OP.”
FWIW I think the moniker is kind of charming.
In the movie Anora ( shes an escort works in a “gentleman’s club” ) she’s referred to as a night butterfly by Vanyas father.
I watch old time movies, see a bar scene and the hookers are called “working girls”. That’s real charming.
And to complete the circle, many prefer to call people of that profession sex workers.
