OnlyFans bans porn

While I am not familiar with Only Fans or it’s content, My understanding from various news stories on the subject is they got pretty big basically from porn content from individual posters. They have now banned that content.

I think porn is probably a bad career choice, but I don’t make moral judgements on what people choose to do.

Are Only Fans porn content providers legitimate sex workers who have been screwed over by Only Fans? Or what?

Only fans helped a lot of women survive the pandemic shut down.

And it’s also helped a lot of sex workers be able to retire from the person to person sex work.

So yeah, as unsavory as the sex industry is, a lot of people are going to be hurt by this.

Moderators have also told BBC news they have found prostitution services advertised, bestiality and material one moderator believed to be incest.

The BBC has seen examples of some of this banned content. In one video, a man is seen eating faeces. In another, a man pays homeless people to have sex with him on camera.

Also, there are references to minors, sex trafficking, spy cams, guns, knives, and drugs.

I think this is going to be a death knell for OnlyFans. By banning porn, not only is it losing its main source of revenue and clicks, but its reputation is already sufficiently tarnished by the porn association that non-porn people aren’t likely to sign up for it now even though it has banned porn.

TLDR News has an 8-minute analysis on the situation along with commentary about money-handling oligopolies with no oversight deciding what may be sold. It mentions in passing the stigmatization of sex workers.

the web cam sites will pick up some of the girls … my free cams have an OF type of things i see a lot of them going back to that …

Agreed. I wasn’t even aware there were parts of OnlyFans that weren’t porn.

TIL that Only Fans has content outside of the sex-industry. I assume that the site will try to rebrand/reposition itself, but that’s been less than successful with previous companies and most of those had a more diverse base.

If it’s too long for me to read, why on earth would I want to spend 8 minutes watching a video? There is no way that the written version is going to take more time. I don’t understand that company either. I must be old.

I read that it was the credit card companies that forced the change. It’s interesting that they are driving this. I doubt they would be doing so through corporate prudishness. I suspect they are worried about having some sort of deemed criminal or civil culpability if there is illegal activity on websites that use their payment system.

It’s likely related to the SESTA-FOSTA act. Payment processors have a lot to lose if they can be found to have facilitated sex trafficking, even indirectly. So they push hard requirements onto the sex industry, which of course can’t make the kind of guarantees the payment processors want. So these companies either lose the ability to accept payments or ban any kind of sex work.

Here is a Twitter thread on the payment processing problem:

This is terrible. It’s forcing women to go back to $7.00 an hour jobs at Applebees where they’ll be more sexually harassed than they were doing their own cam shows. Fuck TERFs and fuck Christians.

Per earlier posts, this is not happening because OnlyFans is stupid, it’s happening because the big financial institutions are putting the heavy compliance burdens directly onto the content providers.

That means the small and independent adult performers that make up the OnlyFans content base will be unable to meet the high bar of proof, and the giant porn studios that can handle this level of compliance will take over the entire marketplace.

This is also part of the stair-step approach being used by anti-porn activists in their decades-long quest to buckle chastity belts onto the entire population. They started out as moral crusaders opposing porn directly, but didn’t get much traction outside their own bluenose base. So they rebranded themselves as being in opposition to sex trafficking, especially the trafficking of children, and they’ve made a lot more progress. But that’s not their actual objective — they ultimately want to put a big torpedo into the side of the porn industry as a whole. This is a success for them, and the first of what they hope to be several subsequent steps.

Am I the only one who’s never heard of this site before? My wife and I were watching a recent episode of the tonight show last night on Hulu, and Jimmy Fallon made a joke about OnlyFans now banning porn. Part of the joke was “don’t pretend you don’t know about OnlyFans”. So apparently I’m more out of touch than the Jimmy Fallon demographic these days :scream:

From what I can gather (the OP link is down and I don’t want to google it), it’s a site where anybody can upload videos, kind of like YouTube but with porn content allowed-- until now that is. Does that about cover it?

Are you familiar with Patreon? I’ve seen OnlyFans described as “like Patreon but with sexually explicit content.”

Huh? Is this a non-sequitur?

OK, thanks. So now I guess that description can be edited to be “like Patreon.”

Pretty much - the point being that people can make money from their own homemade porn rather than being beholden to studio contracts, producers and directors.

I was reading about this on reddit and they said the descriptions should be “like Patreon but more expensive” apparently OnlyFans takes a 30% cut unlike Patreon’s 5% cut.

Dear lord, I’m out of it. Patreon? I’ll google.
