Questions about those single-girl adult sites

On another messageboard I frequent there was a big (and obnoxious) conversation about Kate from Kate’s Playground and whether there is something wrong with her foot. I couldn’t care less about that, but it got me wondering about these websites in general. A few questions came to mind, and I have no idea where to ask these, so I thought I’d try here as I’ve seen some surprisingly deep conversations about porno once or twice.

  1. Do these girls make a lot of money? I’m a finance guy, so the money aspect of all this is very interesting to me. The few I’ve seen range between $20 and $30 per month for access (which seems ridiculously expensive for what you get). Is it safe to say that someone like Kate has at least 500 subscribers? If so, that’s $150,000 per year coming in. Even splitting that in half with one or two other people involved, that’s a damn big chunk o’ change. Of course, I assume it’s tough to get to the top. I was just looking around for a few minutes and it looks like there are hundreds of these sites out there.

  2. Do girls on these sites have any hope of not being discovered by their friends and family? I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that Mom and Dad aren’t thrilled about the idea of their little girl stripping on the internets for money. But how can they not find out? These days it just seems inevitable that someone will discover them and spread the news sooner or later.

  3. On that subject, are there any stories out there about a girl on this kind of site facing repercussions in her real life due to her work online? And is this an inherently dangerous occupation? There are a lot of weirdos out there.

I thought I had more questions, but I guess that’s it. Thanks for any replies. Inquiring minds want to know.

I’m always surprised that with what seems to be a statistically significant number of people in my demographic getting naked on the internet, that not once have I seen anyone I know (cue the J Giles Band right about now).

Maybe they all live in California.

There is so much porn on the internet that there’s a good chance you won’t be found out. Others are estranged from their parents, some don’t care if their parents know, and and a few I know of said that their parents know and don’t care. Not all of the girls take off their clothes. I know a few who run “tease” websites where they just dress in skimpy outfits and the most you see is them wearing a wet, white tshirt. They can still make a fair bit of money.

You can make a lot of money with it (I know one who makes over 100k a year) but only a limited number can reach that amount. In order to get a lot of subscribers you have to have a certain look and/or be willing to do certain fetishes. There are expenses involved, for one, the majority have a camera man or do. That’s splitting your profits in half right there. Secondly, you need money for the equipment, clothes, (a lot of sets are based on outfits), good internet hosting, and ads to promote your website.

It’s also a fulltime job if you want to do make good amount of money. To pay $30, the subscribers are going to want a lot of content. I’m trying to remember how long a photoshoot takes. Depending on the quality of the photographer and the photos it can take anywhere from for an hour and a half to three (maybe more, cant remember) for 50 pics. Most of the girls do videos now and often they are edited. The photographer I know who did pictures for general porn websites had to spend a lot of time airbrushing the pictures as well and I’ve never asked the individual site owners if they had to do that too but I wouldn’t be surprised.

To supplement their income, sometimes the girls will do things like sell their used panties, the clothing they wore for certain sets, or cds/dvds of their work. I’ve also seen the girls go slowly more hardcore. Jordon Capri is one of my favorite individual girls and, after sets with girls that got more risque, she finally has a heterosexual porn available online. The more you are willing to show and do the more money you get.

Yikes. That plays into my question above about real life. Selling used underwear seems inherently dangerous. Do people who aren’t obsessive psychos purchase something like that?

When I used to do phone sex, I had certain (very few) customers I would offer this kind of product to. I’m pretty sure none of the guys (maybe three of them over a course of years, one bought multiple pairs) were psycho. I’m still in contact with the guy who bought multiple pairs, and he may well buy more in the future. He’s my only remaining client. I don’t talk to him often, but he pays $100.00/hr. so it’s well worth my time to clear my schedule for him.

Can’t find it but IIRC someone (Dante’s Harddrive?) which started out with pictures of herself and sold it for seven figures but that was in the '90s. Anyone else have more info?

You might be thinking of Danni’s Hard Drive, run by busty porn star Danni Ashe (who was never that pretty, IMO, but had a giant fake rack). Her site was one of the most popular of its kind for several years.

This is a lot like the magazine business, only with a worse business model.

Magazines tend to make most of their money from advertising, not from subscriptions. Advertising fees are based on circulation, so they try to have the highest circulation possible. That usually involves practically giving away the magazine for next to nothing (The New Yorker has a deal for 25 cents an issue) in order to entice you to subscribe.

The problem is that huge percentages of people who subscribe this way never renew, so the magazine is in a ever-tightening spiral of finding new suckers, er, subscribers.

Porn sites have similar problems. They have to charge a high initial fee, because people can download so much so quickly. A one-time charge of $30 may seem high to some, but if it allows you to download the whole site, it works out to be quite low per item.

You then have the magazine problem. Most people will never bother to come back for a second month. So you either have to spend large amounts of time and money to build up another set of images and videos to make a new subscription viable or you have to entice another sucker, er, subscriber to take the first one’s place.

Most magazines fail pretty quickly. Some do well. A few do spectacularly. Even those tend to have a few year window after which some other magazine gains in popularity at its expense.

The online porn industry has to work almost identically. The Danni site was huge for a couple of years, but I hadn’t heard her name for a couple of years before this thread. The hundreds of girls at the bottom, pardon the pun, have an impossible task competing with Danni’s - let me check - 800 hours of videos for $9.95/month. Most of them will go out of business very soon or find a way to compete with harder content or more fetishes or younger-looking girls or flaming zucchini shots or whatever the market is asking for today.

Are there repercussions? Sure. There have been stories of teachers being fired just because they posted arty nude photos of themselves. The ones who have any porn histories, and those stories can easily be found, get fired even if their histories are well in their pasts. The problem is that most girls who go into porn do so because they don’t have any other marketable skills, not because they’re pretty. They don’t have futures, and their presents aren’t looking very good either. Repercussions are the least of their concerns. Eating is.

“Considering that the couple’s videos start at $39.95 (photo CDs start at $24.99), Hubby and Wifey may be joining the ranks of America’s millionaires before long, though they demur when asked about profits.”

I’ve wondered about this. Is it true?

Alarmingly enough, I knew who you were talking about. Now I’m curious, is her foot messed up? The free pictures don’t show her feet. Now I’ll always think about that everytime her site pops up.

What I don’t understand is why someone would want to subscribe to a single girl site. I’d think that for anonymous porn viewing, variety is the spice of life. Unless, of course, you are an obsessive stalker.

Cool! Are you a fat 60 year old housewife in curlers and a bathrobe like that music video? That’s what I imagine all phone sex workers to look like. Who did that video anyway?

I have a friend who does phone sex. She’s attractive in an 30 year old Mom kind of way. She does it because they live in the boonies and her husband is out of work and they have to pay bills. She said most of her calls are from the UK.

Not just that, but if that’s the website I think it is, doesn’t she actually never, technically, get naked? I seem to recall she always has the camera angles so you never see her crotch, just some ass crack at best, and has either a bra or more commonly electrical tape over her nipples.

Heh, she certainly doesn’t on the free looks that are constantly referenced on x n x x.com which is definitely NSFW.

I to have heard the rumours of Kate having something wrong with her foot. I am pretty damn sure that I have seen a video of her stripping. This video was full body, including her feet. She did get mostly naked in this video (showed her T & A but not her P). I do not recall any feet deformities.

Jordan Capri has a hetero porn out? Oh going to have to go find that! She is smokin’!

Aerosmith.

I was actually in my 30s when I was doing that on a regular basis. Fat? Yes, especially then. Now I’m edging more towards “normal-sized”. Bathrobe? Not so much. Typically a night shirt, but if it was cold, sweats.

I did an “ask the phone sex operator thread” some time back. If you’re interested, I can dig up a linkie for you.

Oh, I missed that one! Yes,could you link to it please?

  1. Do these girls make a lot of money?
According to some of their myspace profiles they are. Of course that could totally be false info. I wouldn’t doubt that your more popular ones are doing pretty damn well. ie Kate.

  2. Do girls on these sites have any hope of not being discovered by their friends and family?
Like others have said, most probably don’t care. Otherwise they would either cover their faces or choose not to enter the field.

  3. On that subject, are there any stories out there about a girl on this kind of site facing repercussions in her real life due to her work online?
Tiffany Teen got in a tizzy when people found out her identity/location. Somehow they linked her by finding out who her fiance at the time was or something. Kates identity was also blown. Someone recognized her from highschool and with her real name they googled her and found a load of information. Where she lived, her father’s apparent suicide (or illness I forget), etc…

I’m amazed people still pay for porn.
