Economics of free internet porn?

I have occasionally heard rumors of various sites on the Internet which claim to offer ‘free porn.’ If such sites indeed exist, I presume they are attempting to make money in some fashion. But how do they turn a profit if they’re already giving out free porn? If I, Joe Pornseeker, am in the market for porn, and they lure me to their site with the offer of free porn, then what is my incentive to pay for porn? Contrariwise, if the goal is to track my internet habits in some manner, then what data are they after? Obviously they would learn that I’m interested in porn… but they’ve already given me porn for free, so what good does that knowledge do them?

They show you ads as well as porn.

Or infect your PC with keyloggers and take your credit card info.

But yeah, mostly just lots and lots of ads. Your incentives are to pay for better/longer/higher definition/ad free pr0n.

As a matter of fact I have found a totally free porn site and I do mean totally. No CC info is asked for, no address, no nothing, no name other than an e-mail address.

The films/pics on this site are many and varied and are of excellent quality, some of them are up to 4 hours long.

There are no pop-ups and as yet I’ve received no spam at all, after 3 weeks of ::ahem:: study.

How they make money is anyones guess, they do explain how but it’s long and complicated and I don’t quite understand the blurb.

The only ads shown are for other porn sites but you can just ignore these as they are pay sites.

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post the website on here so I won’t until I’m told otherwise

I have bought (rather mild) porn on eBay and right after, started getting porn spam.

Porn sites used to be notorious for Spyware. Now any site (Snopes for example) can be infected through selling ads. Still, uless the porn site was affiliated with a well known major distrbutor, I’d be very careful.

That’s a cool name. Are you Dutch?

That right there is the rub.

I run a large, successful pay porn site. We have relationships with “affiliates”, people or companies who take some of our content, put it on the own site, and let people see it for free.

If their viewers like what they see, and want to see more, they are funneled to my site, where they see what we offer. If they buy a subscription, the affiliate gets a cut of the sale (50% in our case), and 50% of each rebill if that person joins as a rebilling customer.

We pay around $15,000US a week to affiliates (we have around 90 of them). Some affs make dozens of sales a day, others make one a week. Most affiliates, especially the bigger ones, work extremely hard at getting sales.

We’re lucky in that affiliate sales account for a small percentage of our overall sales, but for many commercial wesbites, 90% of all their sales are via affiliates. Affiliates basically run the adult industry in many ways, most commercial porn websites are at their beck and call, if they want the affs to keep sending sales.

** abby** : So exactly how much discount do you offer to SDMB members?

Just askin’

tell ya what: use TSD001 for a 30% discount in the coupon code field on the join page.

But what we really should be talking about, of course, if all that free porn…

I think the ads are the crux. But then the point is those sites have connections to further connections to MORE BETTER PORN. They are basically commcials. And I never thought I would but a couple of times I’ve ponied up for the real movies, etc. Briefly. It does pull you in a bit.

Porn is porn, right?

How can you have “better” porn

For real? 'Cause, seriously, your site is the only site I’ve ever contemplated paying for.

All well and good but what is your site called?

Out of curiosity

Check her profile.

My god, how can you not? Better image quality, better looking models, more of your favourite kink, larger dimension HD video, a website that is easy to navigate and won’t cheat you… and that’s just the start.

Hardly. You might as well say “well books are books”. All the same. Nora Roberts, Tolstoy, what’s the difference?

Although to be honest I was thinking more of long internet porn movies with the “happy ending” which is usually what you have to pay for. But there are definatly better porn sites than others.

snerk

Please do tell

Mods, for the greater good of all, is chowder allowed to share his amazing find?

Ok seriously. You were joking, right?
