Upgrading from Kindle to iPod

I currently have a Kindle DX (the large one) and am mostly happy with it. But it does not do color magazines.

If I get an iPod and install Kindle software on it, do I get to keep all my digital content?

iPod? The screens are pretty tiny on them.

Don’t you mean iPad?

I’m assuming you mean iPad. And yes, you can re-download your purchases onto your iPad.

E-ink is radically different from LCD displays. I find that I can read e-ink forever. LCD tires my eyes out after a while.

I believe magazines subscribed to through Amazon can only be read on one Kindle device, so you’d have to “deregister” and delete the content from the DX in order to view it on the iPad/iPod (for books I think you can have the content on up to 6 devices).

I have two Kindles and an iPad and have common content on all of them, as well as an iMac and an iPhone. It all works great. To see Kindle content on an iPad or iPhone one must put the free Kindle app from the app store on it, but it all works smoothly. The Kindle app on a portable device does not support shopping at the store, so you need to do that with something else such as the Kindle (hardware). I am not sure how you’re supposed to get Kindle content into the Kindle reader on an iPad if you do not have something else such as a Kindle (hardware), or the Kindle reader software on your Mac or PC.
Must confess, tho, I do not use these for magazines.

You can’t shop for material from within the Kindle app, but you can shop for books using the Safari browser on your device. Go to the Kindle store on Amazon.com, select a book, and make sure your device, iPhone/iPad/Blackberry or whichever is registered, and click “Buy for $x.xx” Your selection will be sent directly to your device and you can start reading it in the Kindle app.

I find the e-ink screen on the Kindle to be more comfortable reading from than LCD’s such as the Kindle Fire or iPad. The iPad has a lot more functions though, will all those apps and whatnot.

Right! I forgot this way. Thanks. It works fine.

Thank you all.

This is no longer true. I have a subscription to the Economist on my Kindle, and I read it on my Kindle and also on my Android Kindle Reader. I couldn’t do this when I first got my Kindle last year, but they seem to have made the change without fanfare.

…or just by using the Internet Explorer/Firefox/Chrome/whatever browser you use on your ordinary, old-fashioned computer to visit Amazon.com.

You can purchase directly from the Amazon store via your browser, on the PC or on your handheld’s browser.

I have a Kindle and 2 iPads and 3 iPhones, and Kindle app works and shares on them all, including the iPhones and iPads, including periodical subscriptions.

I believe the problem is this - Apple decreed that all purchases, subscriptions, etc. performed by apps must go through the Apple Store, where they would rake off their 30% pound of flesh. Amazon was not about to give up this much, so they found that they met the terms an conditions provided they took the “browse store” and “buy” buttons out of the app. As mentioned you can still buy from any regular browser, it goes into the archive, and you can download from that archive to any kindle/app.

Which might not be available if you’re away from home and already have your smartphone in your hand. Why wait until you get home if you don’t have to?
