Upgrading from OS 8.6

I mentioned to a friend that my PowerBook G4 is two years old, and I’ll be needing a faster computer eventually. He laughed and said that he’s still using a G3 with OS 8.6 – and editing video on it!

I’ve said that I picked up an old iMac Indigo G3 PowerPC a while ago, and it came with OS 9. I bought a used copy of OS X on eBay. The seller sent a bunch of discs containing the intermediate versions that had to be loaded sequentially before I could load OS X. (OS X couldn’t be loaded directly over the version of OS 9 I had.) IIRC I had to update firmware with a free download from Apple as well. Or that may have been for the AirPort card. I don’t remember. I know I did the firmware update, and I think I needed to to upgrade the OS. Anyway…

I still have the intermediate discs, and the old version of OS X 10.1. I know they allow an upgrade from OS 9; but would my friend be able to upgrade to OS X from OS 8.6 with these?
