Upgrading from XP Home to Pro: how scared should I be?

I’m biting the bullet and going to finally do this.

According to MS, it should go smoothly. I shouldn’t have to reinstall software or redo settings. Yeah, I’m sure it SHOULD go smoothly, but does it really?

Am I setting myself up for a weekend of frustration and mayhem?

Should I just buy a new computer with XP Pro installed on it instead?

And yes… I have backups. And backups of the backups.

IIRC, the only difference between the two is that Pro allows for networking connections. Are you setting up a little home net? If not why bother? I’ve been using XP Home for three years (after the first SP), and have installed Office XP with no probs.

Yeah.

Why’re you making the change?

XP home is XP pro with a few switches turned off.

You can still have a home network using XP home. XP Pro allows additional security features that give you more control over your network. Most of these features are not really neede at home unless your SO is a professional hacker!

I am not sure what you are expecting to get out of Pro. If home is working don’t bother to upgrade.

The upgrade however is painless at least. I’ve done about 5 for various reasons and no hiccups so far. It usually takes under an hour and once on a 1.4Ghz laptop took 2 hours.

It’s a work thing - I need to run IIS and MSMQ.

No hiccups, eh. Hmmm I sure hope this works. I’ve been putting it off forever, and it’s finally to the point where the drawbacks of upgrading are less than the problems caused by not upgrading. I’m hoping that my fears are groundless and the upgrade will go smoothly.

I started out with XP Pro and when I installed SP2, the splash screen now just says Windows XP.

I wondered if SP2 converted all XP levels to Pro.

No, Hold down the Windows Key and hit the Break Key (pause/break).
This will bring up the System Properties and should show the Verison of Windows as follows:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
