I want to upgrade the RAM in my powerbook, specifically I want to max it out by adding a 1GB card into it. I bought some generic RAM at staples for about 200$ Canadian and it doesn’t fit. I also checked out the Apple store and 1GB of ram there sells for 300$! Where can I go to get ram for my powerbook? I’ve heard some horror stories about installing ram so I am leaning toward the Apple Ram, but it is so expensive! Any insight would be helpful.
CMC fnord!
Sounds like you bought the wrong form factor. Notebook RAM is different from desktop. Make sure you’re getting the right stuff or you just won’t be able to install it because it won’t fit. If you’ve got the same PowerBook as me (1.5 GHz) you want PC2700 SDRAM, 200 pin, 333MHz, 2.5 inch modules. Going rate is around $100 apiece. (Lucky bastard, when I bought mine, it was running about $140+). You can go to the Apple menu, choose About this Mac, and click More Info to find out what memory you have installed already and where. Also gives detailed specs on your computer.
Samsung memory is usually what they install at the factory. Other World Computing is my first stop for comparison. They’ve usually got some of the best prices for Mac-specific stuff and are often competitive in price for RAM and hard drives.
I compared with Crucial, and this store seems to me just a few dollars cheaper, if I searched correctly: The Chip Merchant
I have used them to buy extra RAM for Apple computers for the past 10 years at least, probably more. (Not that I buy RAM that frequently, but at least 4 purchases with them.) Along with the memory, they will send you the exact instructions and the necessary tools for installing into your Macintosh desktop or laptop.
