Uploading audio?

I just tried to upload a short .mp3 file in a post as part of an answer to someone who was asking for an example of something we were discussing. There is an upload icon at the top of the reply window and one can select and apparently upload an .mp3 but when I try to post the reply I get an error saying you can’t do this.

Am I going about this the wrong way, or is it an intrinsic limitation of the software the board runs on? If the latter, shouldn’t the upload icon be removed or at least greyed out?

The board settings allowing us to upload media (even images) have always been disabled. We can only link to media - although the board makes it look like it’s part of our posts.

This is accurate. No uploading is allowed and the management doesn’t want to host files, even small ones.

The upload icon probably should be greyed out or removed, that would help.

Hopefully myself or another Mod can look into this later, though I’m sure if it exists, it is in the admin controls.

In fact, I have successfully uploaded audio to a different board which apparently uses the same underlying software platform. But probably this is configurable on a per-installation basis?

If it’s disabled here, I think the upload icon should not appear in the reply window.

Thanks guys. I was just a bit taken aback because, as I said, I have successfully uploaded audio files in a different forum using the same platform.

I suppose the only way I can do what I originally intended is to put the file on some public arena like YouTube and link to it. C’est la vie…

Yeah; that’s how anyone who is posting an image here has to do it. Even if you have the image on your own phone or computer, you have to upload it to a third-party image-hosting site, and place a link to it on that site in your post.

Right. On the other hand, what I generally upload to YouTube is more or less finished musical work.

Anyone have any good suggestions for sites which one can use as a sort of temporary transfer buffer for music, images or videos?

I like https://postimages.org/ for Pictures. I don’t think they take audio though.

Vocaroo allows you to save and link to audio files.
That’s what I use for short music/audio clips.

I use imgbb for pics.
I use YouTube for videos.

You probably have a few gigs of storage if you have an acct with Google/Gmail or Microsoft/Hotmail/Outlook, probably others. Google calls it Drive. You upload and get a “share link” with assignable privileges.

If not, make one.

You can also use https://soundcloud.com, or just upload it to YouTube as an unlisted upload. That way you can share the URL with anyone you want (including posting it here), but it won’t be discoverable inside YouTube itself.

Cecil is allowed to upload stuff (and has done so).

I will admit that it does seem kinda silly to have a button that only one person here can use, but the button does get used.
