It’s legitimate, if that’s what you’re asking. I ran the numbers and found it only to be worth the bother if you have at least a few years to build up your account. I wouldn’t make any decisions about purchasing products based on whether you’ll get upromise points, but it could be a nice bonus, especially if you sign up your extended family. I’m only a year away from college, and we’d make maybe $50 or less in that time.
I’ve put over $500 into my niece’s 529 college fund via UPromise. I shop online a lot, and I will preferentially buy from UPromise merchants. Also, I recently got the UPromise credit card, and I use it like a debit card; I pay with the charge card whenever possible (groceries, gas, vet, prescriptions, etc), I write the cost in my checkbook and deduct it from my balance, and then I pay the bill in full when it comes. One percent of all charges go to my UPromise account. This puts $15-20 into my account every month. It puts a LOT in when I go on vacation and charge airfare and hotels.
I even charged my SDMB membership and that of several people I sponsored.
I’ve been a member for 3 or 4 years and have never had any problems.
My daughter is 5 months, so I would say we have a while for it to build up!
Thanks for the input. It’s something I will look into, as I shop online a lot, too.
