"Upstairs, Downstairs" - newly addicted via DVD

Netflix is a bad thing…I have developed whole new TV show addictions because of it, two of the most prominent being “X-Files” and “Upstairs, Downstairs”.

So, any fans? I’m through the first season and 4 eps into the second, Miss Lizzie’s marriage just went kablooey…in a most shocking manner, I must say. Pretty freaky, and kinda hard to swallow. How did they come up with that?

I’m a little annoyed…the first season, last disc had a retrospective that pretty much gave away all the plot points. It doesn’t mean I wont’ watch, but it would have been nice to have more surprises.

I guess no one is a fan. :frowning:

I posted a reply yesterday, but it doesn’t look like it went through.

Basically, I’ve been a fan for years, and just got the complete boxed set earlier this summer, since my tapes were getting old.

I do agree that the end of the first season is an odd place to put the 25th anniversary retrospective; end of the 5th season would have made more sense, and not spoiled things for anyone viewing the series for the first time. I remember how shocked and irked I was when I was casually informed of one character’s upcoming death before I got to that episode.

What I like most about Upstairs, Downstairs is that the characters feel like Edwardian people, with their outlook, bigotries and class distinctions and all, not like 1970’s people who just happen to be wearing high collars and corsets.

I love U/D. I am a Lady Marjorie groupie. A NJ station ran the whole series about ten years ago and I taped them: have about a dozen videotapes art home, each with six episodes, from 1903–1930. Can watch them endlessly.

Well, here’s a spoiler request for you, then: Will we ever see Sarah again? Even though the character kind of annoys me, I really resented the way she was packed off and disposed of. I want to see what becomes of her and the rugrat…

Good show.

Wow, this brings back memories. My mother and I used to watch Upstairs Downstairs and we usually tried our best to never miss an episode. I didn’t realise it was available on DVD. I think I’d enjoy watching it all over again.

There was a spin-off series, called Thomas and Sarah, that ran for 13 episodes. It is out on video, but I don’t if it’s on DVD yet.

Yes. She comes back—pregnant as Paddy’s Pig—during James’ engagement party in 1911.
