Upstate NY and NYC Dopers - how are you doing?

Long Island, too.

Major ice storm all over upstate NY, and close to 200,000 people without power in the Capital District alone.
I don’t have power in my house. Showered in the dark this morning, and then scraped the ice off my car and warmed it up for a good bit.

I’m worried about the old folks in our neighborhood. We have a lot of them, and it is cold out there.

And I’m worried about my gecko. I really wanted to bring him to work, but I left him with a hot water bottle. Hope he’s OK. :frowning:

How’s everyone doing?

I’m in upstate NY and doing just fine. I didn’t realize there was an ice storm at all! I guess I’m not upstate enough to have gotten it.

I love ice storms by the way. Well, not the damage, but I love the beauty.

NYC was unaffected. It just rained a lot.

I should mention I live in Albany County, right in Albany, btw. Uptown, in the township of Colonie. Which was the place hardest hit by the power outages.

NYC was just drenched in rain. I’m kind of sad I missed out on an awesome display of winter weather, but since yesterday was our office holiday party it was probably better this way.

I hope everyone stuck in the storms are warm and safe!

I might grab my camera later and try to get some pictures. It is gorgeous. The trees are encased in perfect columns of ice, and it looks beautiful.

That was supposed to be an ice storm!? Damnit. If I’d known, I would’ve been a lot less pissy about getting rained on and a lot more grateful about having avoided an ice storm.

Till the branches snap off and bust the power lines.
Thanks for the card btw.

Looks like it was mainly the Capital region. Here in the Tri-Nation area (Niagara Peninsula, Niagara County, Tuscarora Nation) there was almost no ice. A very small amount south of here.

About 6" of wet, heavy snow in Tompkins County. I don’t think it got below 25 degrees all night. Most of the schools are closed, made for a slow commute this morning, but it’s really not that bad.

My power blinked a few times, and the cable went out around 6 and came back on while I was asleep. There are a lot of branches down locally (Ulster County), but road conditions are fine. Not looking forward to 15 degrees F tonight, though.

National Grid has no idea when the power is coming on, and their website just says:
We apologize for the inconvenience, but we’re unable to process your request at this time. For more information, please call us at 1-800-867-5222.

The number is busy.

I wouldn’t care at all if it wasn’t for the power thing.

Apparently I was wrong here, and southern Erie County has been hit pretty hard. No word about power outages or the like.

I know this isn’t the Pit, but screw you, National Grid. It takes forever for you guys to fix an outage and our rates have skyrocketed over the past two years. Plus your customer service level for billing is about zero. Would it kill you to be able to accept payments over the phone?

Oh, no, please tell them to go fuck themselves with a rusty chainsaw. This is the fucking Northeast… Ice storms should not be a surprise. It should be business as usual.

Just try and tell them this is a good reason for underground wires. They laugh and say “Things like this don’t happen that often”

Nothing but crazy rain doin’ on Long Island. Rained like hell all day yesterday as well as all night last night, but I didn’t hear about any power outages or the like.

Ironically, here in the northernmost part of the state we missed most of the storm.

Just a metric ass-load of rain down here in NYC. I didn’t even know there was an ice storm until I caught the news on my way to work tonight. I’ve got family in the Albany-Troy area, I’ll have to give them a call in the morning.

I still have no power. I live five minutes away from my office so I came in here to warm up a bit and bring in my poor gecko, who was freezing at home - we just couldn’t keep him warm, and he was so cold, poor thing. I feel much better now that he is here. I know he’s just a gecko but I still love him. :frowning:

Anyway other than a little self-pity we’re managing. It was cold last night, but thankfully there’s two of us - this would be 10000x times worse if we were alone - and we just bundled blankets onto the bed.

Still 35000 people without power in the Albany region, as of 12 pm this afternoon.
