Urban Outfitters Kent State sweatshirt for sale.

Love this verse… good job.

But now I’ve got this (original) song stuck in my ear

Do they think we’re stupid enough to believe that? Seriously, WTF did those half-witted jackasses think it would allude to?

The red was not supposed to be bloodstains. It simply represents a bad dye-job. Get it? Like those kids at Kent State, who did a bad job dying?

The company added, “The one-of-a-kind item was purchased as part of our sun-faded vintage collection. There is no blood on this shirt nor has this item been altered in any way.”
And wrote that the red stains are “discoloration from the original shade of the shirt and the holes are from natural wear and fray.”

You know, I might believe this if there is an entire collection with multiple state colleges in multiple tie die colors available but something tells me this wasn’t the case.

“My grandfather was wounded at Kent State and all I got was this lousy sweatshirt.”

Some years back there was a web comic that in one installment built the gag around the question “But who actually DOES own the Internet?” and the punchline answer was “Spammers”.

Well, it’s 2014 and, guess what, the new answer is: “Trollers”

If I read it correctly, there was a single copy of the item - it was unique. It’s not a line of Kent State sweatshirts. So it’s *conceivable * that there was no intent. But for no one in the system to recognize the bad taste of the item and put a stop to it is pretty lame.

They got their advertising and have already moved on. People who were offended are not the target audience for their goods.

**Sailboat **won this thread.

Newsflash: Corporation advertises t-shirt trivializing tragic historical event! Maybe it’s for real, maybe it’s just to stir up some publicity.

I’m shocked and saddened. Now excuse me while I go wipe the tears off my Lorraine Motel t-shirt.

It’s so unique, this shirt, that even if there’s only one, it’s only $130?? And what’s so cool about this shirt that you only made one? What other combinations, did you try?
Yeah, I’d say they’re into the publicity on this. Nothing else makes sense.

Yeah, but running coach is a close second.

I agree that this thing is disgusting but I do also see the point of view that at least maybe some of those who have forgotten or never knew what went on will be reminded/learn a bit of important history.

Actually, that one looks a lot more like a mix of general ignorance and people reaching for offence at any cost. Last I checked, the Jews were not issued telnyashkas - the stripes on camp unis were wide, vertical and gray-on-black or yellow-on-black. And while the jews did have a “double triangle” ID tag on their uniforms, it was never plain yellow. The infamous yellow star with “Jude” in the middle was to be worn over civilian clothes, outside of the camps.

So getting offended at that shirt seems niggardly to me, if you will :). And if *anything *with a combination of stripes and stars becomes OMG wildly offensive, the US might have a flag problem on its hands ;).

They have the same shirts with the Jackson State logo.

Where did you see that Jackson State shirt, HubZilla? I don’t find it on the Urban Outfitter site.

It was probably too obscure to be a whoosh. There was a similar shooting of college protesters 11 days after Kent State.

The crappiness of the “badge” does bring to mind yellow stars for Jews, but the stripes are quite different. As hard as it might be believe no one thought “this looks like a concentration camp uniform”, it seems even harder to believe that anyone thought it would be good for business to knowingly make concentration camp pyjamas for children.

As previously noted, the shirt was unique. Their “Vintage Finds” section seems to be single copies of what I presume to be old clothing that their buyers ran across, not items that they have had manufactured. That would explain the prices as well. I’m not saying that someone shouldn’t have caught it and it’s certainly possible that they did, but chose to feign ignorance. It also seems quite plausible that their vintage finds are seen by a single employee, who then adds them to their inventory, who could easily be way too young to even know about Kent State. Hell, there are probably a couple of people who don’t even know who CSNY are.

Two students were killed and 11 injured in the Jackson State shootings.

And guess why this incident is “obscure” and Kent State isn’t? (Hint: it’s due to more than there not being a hit song written about it.)

Certainly not because the Jackson State students were black. I’m sure one of our enlightened post-racial members will be along to tell us the real reason.
