Us and Them- Symphonic Pink Floyd

I was just wondering if anyone has heard this disc and what their thoughts are on it? I bought it a few years ago, and “rediscovered” it in my collection.

I love Us and Them. It’s a little limited in scope (it only has songs from DSotM and The Wall), but all the songs they chose made the transition to symphonic rock well.

In the same vein, I have also listened to the symphonic Led Zeppelin album Kashmir and the symphonic Jethro Tull album A Classic Case. Us and Them is far and away the best of the three albums. ACC is watered down with guest appearances and electric guitar parts that take away from what may otherwise be a good album. Kashmir’s problems are more fundamental: Led Zeppelin does not make good symphonic rock. It’s good for a rock band, but don’t try and arragne it for horns and strings.

Yes, I realise I spent most of the review talking about two other albums. Let me put it this way: Us and Them doesn’t make the mistakes of the other two albums. The good music stays good and is presented in a different way.

Was Kashmir done by the London Philharmonic as well?

I love this CD. It’s extremely well done.

It’s definately a keeper.

“Echos”…the entire B side of Meddle is also some very good instumental Floyd.
