US Army Alaska to be reflagged as airborne division amid surge in troop suicides

Sorry, but this is big news to us old retired soldiers. The 11th Airborne is coming back! Cool!

Seems like the organization was kind of strange and ad-hoc to begin with, with the two BCTs being part of the 25th Infantry Division, the rest of which is based in Hawaii.

So will the 11th be its own division, and the 25th will pick up a couple other BCTs from the NG or elsewhere?

Well the 25th is (or used to be) huge with six brigades. US Army Alaska really ran the 1st and 4th Brigades. So the difference is US Army Alaska will become the 11th Airborne. It will be a bobtail division, be we have a few of those and besides divisions are not really all that important anymore.

There are usually support brigades at the divisional level that aren’t part of a BCT- artillery, sustainment, and aviation brigades. I was more wondering if they were going to round those out to full divisional strength for the 11th Airborne and/or the 25th Infantry depending on how things end up.

Thank you. The aviation brigade is of course considered by doctrine as a maneuver brigade. At the moment, the 25th has five maneuver brigades.

This change will not involve any additional forces. It is just a reorganization.
