US Open (golf) Pool

There were 42 different golfers picked by the 14 entrants. Only four of those 42 were in the top ten. You picked all four of those entrants, (as did glowacks) and you had $10 on Davis Love III who was a long shot. Yeti also had put $10 on DLIII but he didn’t have Phil and Tiger.

I have to admit I did intentionally pick DLIII, Ernie Els and a couple of others because how I’d seen them play in the recent past. And I picked Weir because I’m a homey. Other than that, I pretty much rolled the dice.

Man, DJ’s start was pretty painful to watch. I recently took a short game lesson, and when I was asking about tougher and tougher shots my pro said, “You know if you are in that rough of a spot, you can always call an unplayable and might be better off.” Then when he jacked his next drive so far they couldn’t even follow it from the blimp…

It really was handy that they would go into that sappy music to cue FF. Same whenevr they would show Costas/Miller/Nantz’s mugs…

So what was the deal w/ Phil hitting off those cables? He feared a drop that would be worse than sitting on a cable?

I also basically just guessed, picking names of people I liked for a few bucks, and putting most of it on the favorites.

I’m assuming that the money on DL3 was the main determining factor given his long odds. I thought I was in fairly good position with my top 3 choices in the top 10 and DL3 in there as well, but I didn’t realize Sam had more on DL3 than I did.

I can’t believe how many bad approach shots the big names made with wedges in their hands, often from the fairway. I know those greens are small, but sheesh guys-- it’s the US Open. Aim for the middle of the green and give yourself a chance. One of the commentators said something about the idea of not putting flags in the pins so the guys wouldn’t shoot for them.

I guess mortals like us cannot imagine how tough those greens were, but given that even par won the darned thing - and is almost always a decent Open score, it really surprised me that there was not more “playing it safe”. Was thinking of that British wher IIRC Tiger didn’t even carry a driver… They were messing up tee shots with 3-woods and hybrids. WTF?

US Open pressure is probably part of it. I know the greens are small and very fast, but there just seemed to be an awful lot of mistakes. Yeah, Par is a good score in the US Open. I was just really surprised that none of the big names made a move on Sunday. McDowell had to be sweating that out!

Ernie just was chunking it on the back 9…he could of had it!

ETA: Sam would still have won since he had $20 on Els to my $10.

Grats, Sam!
