Duval missed by a lot. Hope he keeps it at -2
Smart play by Glover on 18 - hits a mid iron off the tee with a two shot lead. Johnny Miller said what I was thinking (opposite of Van de Velde).
Glover hit a 6 iron off the tee and barely caught fairway.
Duval and Phil tied for 2nd. Love to hear the experts explain that.
All right.
+3-4 in the final round will be good enough to win it.
And even after a horrible week, Tiger ties for 6th.
Wonderful-I get home for lunch, hoping to catch the final holes, and can’t find the broadcast on anywhere. ESPN for some completely unknown and unfathomable reason has Sportscenter on instead of the tournament, even though it was showing it earlier. Not a good move.
Glover hit the back of the green. Long way but a 3 putt wins.
Barnes is going to kick his own ass for months to come, maybe years.
Its on NBC
Hey - I shot 39 on the front on Saturday.
Sure, the course might have been a tad simpler than Beth Page …
Glover wins by 2.
Glover wins.
Coolio!
Hope he uses this win as a jump start to the next level, instead of just being a vanishing one-offer.
Thanks Gonzo-alas too late. Stupid program guide had a soap opera on, and the wonky cable remote must have skipped over the channel (can’t keep the networks and affiliates straight in this town anymore they’ve swapped so often, and I’ve recently switched to high-def and have to memorize a whole bunch of new channels).
MTA: The good news is that local boy Duval is back from the dead (hopefully)…
Yes, which, btw, sets a new record, breaking the tie he had with Sam Snead, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and someone else fairly famous (Arnie?).
NBC’s been the main broadcaster all weekend. ESPN only gets the slopover.
They switched to NBC at 11:30 for the back nine.
Did you have him on your short list?
Once again, the US Open is won by a journeyman who will never win another major championship. I think I figured out a couple years ago that that is more true of the US Open than any of the other major professional championships in men’s golf. Which, frankly, puts the lie to the oft held notion that the Open identifies the “best player” somehow.
Quietly, McIlroy puts up a solid 68 to finish tied for 10th. He’s played solid at two straight majors so I hope he gets some more air time at the British. He’s got a pretty swing.
This actually doesn’t seem that surprising to me. Because the US Open is so punishing of small mistakes (or, it seems this year, of different tee times), it seems natural that it would lead to significantly more variance in scores, which makes luck a larger factor in who wins.
I don’t think this is really true. The PGA produces a whole bunch of one-time winners, as does the British. Sure, you get an occasional Glover or Michael Campbell, but the list of winners is pretty solid and has a bunch of guys with multiple majors. I think Andy North winning it twice gave it a reputation that it can’t shake.
North had the perfect game for the U.S. Open - fairways and greens, no mistakes.
I hope Duval has found his game.
You probably said that two years ago when Angel Cabrera won the US Open.
I’m not a huge Phil fan, but I’m left wondering how the hell he lost that tournament. He had the crowd behind him, the momentum on the back nine, and what looked to be a rather large emotional boost. A storybook ending was the foregone conclusion, and I was already anticipating the media storm.
I still can’t believe he yipped those putts and I’m surprised he didn’t knock it tight on 18.
