The current “I believe that we will win” is a fairly good effort but as a nation, we can surely do better. Are there better out there? Does anyone out there feel especially creative and want to share? Maybe we can all collaborate?
I was hoping that “I believe that we will win a spot in the knockout round on the basis of positive goal differential” would catch on. But I guess it’s too wordy.
“We hope to put out enough effort to stay in this sauna for at least one more game.”
“We only care about soccer once every four years
Still we got further than England and Spain”
You Yanks really need to get over the “it’s so stupid that we progressed despite losing the final group stage match” thing.
You went through! You survived the Group of Death! Everyone in the world understands that you’re doing well, except for yourselves.
But I don’t think it’s stupid. I can’t say I was terribly thrilled that the U.S. team was forced to rely on a favorable result from the Portugal-Ghana game to move on instead of taking care of business by itself, but I don’t think it’s stupid. After all, we have plenty of occasions in American sports where playoff spots are decided by tiebreakers. I was mostly just goofing on the, shall we say, ambitious optimism of the “I believe that we will win” chant. Because I don’t. American soccer’s just not there yet. We might collect a couple of more scalps than most might have predicted, but the big boys will eventually put us down.
How about (sung to the chorus of Guantanamera)…
Better than England
Oh we’ve done better than England
Better than Eeeeeeengland
Oh we’ve done better than England
Repeat ad nauseum
Honestly, I think the only people saying this are those that don’t watch sports normally. This scenario happens all the time in other sports when teams are jostling for a playoff spot.
I was watching a news morning show today. They were gamely trying to talk up “I believe that we will win” as if it was some Shakespearian line for the ages, even though it was probably thought up by someone who just realized his assignment was due in 5 minutes. But they were trying to polish that turd, bless their hearts
How about,
Let’s keep at it,
because the legions of pickpockets
and ATM card skimmers
have bills to pay, too!
"it just doesn’t matter!!!
It just doesn’t matter!!! "
And if the US had gotten exactly the same results in a different order, people would be making Disney movies about this underdog triumph.
Not really.
Look, even in “American” sports, teams regularly back into the playoffs. And occasionally teams that do so eventually win the championship (My Giants won a Super Bowl after needing help to get the last wild card not long ago).
But if the Giants HADN’T won the SUper Bowl, if they’d gotten clobbered in the first round of the playoffs (as I expect the Belgians to clobber us later today), nobody would have regarded that as a triumph.
Not the group of death. Germany, who haven’t won anything in nearly twenty years, an awful Portugal team and the always unstable Ghana. Difficult, but not nearly as difficult as the group with Australia, Chile and both finalists from four years ago, or the group with Costa Rica and three teams with seven world cups between them, including the nation that invented the game, the runners up from the Euros two year ago and the reigning champions of South America.
As for chants, why not go for a song. “You’ll never walk alone” doesn’t seem to be firmly attached to any particular side at international level.
