USA Geography Blind Spots

Kings County in New York State has that beat.

Kings County is much smaller than San Bernardino county, though. I believe we’re discussing geographic size, not population here.

I live in Poughkeepsie, NY.

CT is easy within an hour. MA is a bit tighter but can be done if the two-lane highwats that go there are moving quickly enough (no slow drivers–there’s not many places to pass). Matamoras, PA, on the PA-NJ-NY border, likewise 1 hour if the stars are all aligned. So, yes, 5 states in an hour’s drive (counting NY).

As for an afternoon’s trip…I used to take my daughter to college near Brattleboro, VT, over by the VT-MA-NH border…the fastest way was up the Taconic Parkway, then onto the MassPike, then I-91 north, about two and a half hours one way, absolute minimum, if I was lucky with lights and traffic, and three states.

But once in Brattleboro, it’s just a quick sprint across the bridge to New Hampshire*–4 states.

And on the way back, instead of getting off I-91 at the MassPike, I could continue on to Hartford, CT–5 states.

It would add a bit to my round trip journey to go that way, as 84 dips too far south, but 84 is conveniently enough the way you get to Matamoras (see above), so another couple of states in a couple more hours. Under ideal conditions:

NY-MA-VT-NH-CT-PA-NJ in about 7, 7.5 hours.

I don’t think I’ll do it. But it’s kind of fun to think about.
*I should point out that “sprint” is a bit misleading. For a community that’s got less than 10000 people, the traffic is nasty and constant.

My home state of Missouri is just about exactly the same size as the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

Somewhat off-topic, I got a bar trivia question asking what is the only COUNTRY in the world ending in “g.” It took me a few minutes to get the right answer.

Being from Maryland, I like all the comparisons to Maryland.
