USA TSE, total solar eclipse: April 2024 (was "three years away for USA" when started)

I’m starting to see lots of eclipse prep, more signs, etc., around town. Eclipse souvenirs made their appearance in the ubiquitous souvenir stands today too. The funny thing is the logo the City chose for their events is a pic of an annular eclipse.

And, right on cue, a pretty good dose of cirrus & cirrostratus moved in and much of the day was lit in grayish fuzzy light. By late afternoon a wide lane had opened near zenith, but that’s just random variation, not something systemic or solar-caused. Gaah!

We’ll see how tomorrow shapes up.

FYI, this NOAA Latest Satellite Imagery (noaa.gov) has lots of good satellite images that update every 10 minutes(!). They’re pretty heavily equipped for bandwidth, so they’re unlikely to be overwhelmed with traffic. Your local cell towers may be another thing.

We’re about 50 miles from totality here, and we had a beautiful view of the 2017 eclipse. Mrs. Clark doesn’t get around so well anymore and decided she’d skip the trip and watch the whole thing on TV. Then yesterday she changed her mind and I went on a mad scramble for sunglasses. I hope y’all have yours because there are none left in St. Louis.

Drove from VA to NY today. As we went northeast parallelling the Canadian border we saw more and more residual snow.

We got to the place and the parking area had not been plowed. Our car (a Ford Expedition Max) got completely stuck. No luck getting it unstuck.

A call to the hosts, and they had no idea there was that much snow. They will try to find a plowing service, though with our car stuck, I don’t see how they will get in!

So we, grabbed the absolute essentials to take inside (we will sleep in our clothes), leaving our car sticking into the shoulder.

We struggled to the house, despite buried landscaping hazards (my friend fell 3 times), and found we had been sent incorrect checkin instructions.

Anotger call. “Oops!”. Better instructions were more fruitful.

My husband and kids are arriving shortly. I hope they are successful in getting far enough off the road.

The dishwasher does not work. We hope we can make it out tomorrow to stock up on paper plates. We have plenty of food in the car but it’s not safe to bring it inside because of the snow.

Pretty sure we won’t be leaving a 5-star review.

My daughter also just messaged that she left all her meds behind. She’s freaking out and denying any suggestion I make. I may be looking at 6 hours ifc driving tomorrow to take her back, unless we can get her stuff transferred to a local pharmacy.

On the lighter side, we saw tons of signs along I-81 saying “solar eclipse Monday, expect delays”.

This situation may indeed prevail, but as Sunday dawns the forecast has changed slightly from “cloudy” to “mainly cloudy”. There is hope. In any case, I still plan to forage for interesting wines and cheeses and drive down to my friend’s place on Monday.

Little Rock Forecast Discussion:

Regarding Mon, the main message and potential viewing outcomes has
not changed much, w/ potentially a slightly more optimistic scenario
unfolding for at least, the N/Wrn half of the state

It looks like most of the clouds will be high level.(though some low level are definitely possible)

Definitely good enough for me to drive 11 hours
Brian

I just packed mine.

Can you reach her doctor’s office to write short prescriptions for a local place?

If she uses a chain pharmacy, the have everything on file so can help out. She might not even have to vall her doctor

I left mine at home too. When we were passing through Las Vegas, after a few phone calls, I was able to do an emergency travel refill there to CVS (not my home pharmacy), and I got it there.

For my insurance I had to start the process with them and get an emergency travel override, and then next find a local pharmacy who could fill the prescription, and then finally contact my doc to ask him to submit the prescription to that local CVS.

Some hoops to jump through but it will work. Good luck with your daughter’s process.

It also depends on the meds. I once got an emergency refill of the last three days of an antibiotic prescription just by begging the pharmacist and paying cash, without any proof of prescription. Not that many people lie about wanting a couple of tabs of penicillin and still sound slightly hoarse, i suppose.

Creative solution!

I am on my way. I decided at the last minute to get a half day of skiing in today because Vermont got a lot of snow in the last week. My son is going to meet me at the hotel this afternoon and we will drive up to the eclipse together tomorrow morning.

This actually worked out well because I can get my son to bring all the things I forgot, like camp chairs and sunscreen. After all, it’s supposed to be a clear day! I also just checked to make sure I have my daily pills.

Forecast for Cleveland says 70 and 19% chance of rain in the morning.

A couple of years ago, I realized I was almost out of a blood thinner I was on at the time. I called in a refill, but when I went to pick it up on Christmas Eve day, they had closed early because of a staffing shortage. And I was supposed to head out of town before they reopened. So I went to another local pharmacy with my empty pill bottle, and the pharmacist gave me seven pills to get me through the next week and didn’t even charge me!

It’s a couple hours after sunrise here in Mazatlán and we have about 25% coverage of cirrus and 50% of cirrostratus. The sun happens to be in a cloud hole right now so shadows are sharp while the overall light is fuzzy.

The satellite pix are not real encouraging. There’s a tongue of heavy cirrus extending out to sea a few hundred miles. It’ll take 2+ days to slide the whole thing inland, and that’s assuming it isn’t growing at the west end. The only bright spots are the tongue is slowly sliding south and we may be emerging into the clear on its north side by 11am tomorrow. At least if we’re near the edge, the coverage gets a lot less complete.

Fingers crossed.

Not encouraging here in central Texas, too.

NOAA forecast map:

Somewhere, some guy named Noah is building an ark.

We’re in Durango this morning, travelling on tio Torreon later today. Weather prospects starting to look worrying . It’s high overcast here but Torreon has cloud forecast for tomorrow. Maybe we should have stayed in Mazatlan.

Likely not on a Sunday - and several are ones she really cannot miss (seizure, antidepressant). We are at an urgent care right now and hope they will write a week’s worth for her. Nothing controlled, luckily.

She might be able to get Walgreens to transfer her scrip to a localish one; the one in this town has no pharmacy hours on the weekend, so we’d have to drive 25 miles - so a fresh scrip would be easier. As a last resort we’ll do the 6 hour round trip to get hers from home. I do NOT want to do that.

We finally got our rental car out of the snow, thanks to AAA. Then I parked it where I was told would be okay… and could not back out of that spot!! The AAA got it out of there also, though by getting in the car and moving it.

The owners had gotten in someone with a snowblower, and he had cleared ANOTHER spot, which i drove into, but I couldn’t get out of THAT either!!! Ford Expeditions are RWD and this one did not have 4WD, and it clearly SUCKS in the snow.

You’re going to drive right by us. We, the wife and I, are in San Antonio TX. We’re going to spend eclipse day with our new SDMB friend, @FloatyGimpy . With the weather forecasts being what they are, we may drive southwest in the morning, towards Eagle Pass TX. Hopefully we won’t have to drive that far, but we’re prepared to. SATX to Eagle Pass is 150 miles one way. Not too bad.

I have folding chairs packed in the car, and the car is trail ready to go off-road if need be.

We just spent a ridiculous amount of money on souvenirs at a Buc-ees in Katy, TX.
