If I had known this sooner I would like to have come, but my sister, who is driving, has already made other plans. Anyone going to Indiana?
My wife managed to snag a camping spot in Waco, so that’s where I’ll be.
Montreal is not from the center of totality, but is likely to be cloudy in April.
Same here. The odds of relatively clear skies are only around 50%. April is definitely the month when we start getting a lot of spring sunshine, but it’s more likely later in the month than in the early part.
Grrr. the next total within my striking distance is 2028
Make your reservations now.
May I ask where?
Thanks,
Brian
Camp Caravan.
I plan to be 200 miles SW of you, in Ingram TX. I’ve been talking with @ThelmaLou about a Dope gathering in San Antonio on the Saturday before the Monday eclipse. I haven’t started the thread yet. Need to do that, over in MPSIMS.
San Antonio is 175 miles S of Waco. Hope that’s not too far for you to drive, @beowulff . It’s 75 miles from Ingram, where I’ll be.
I think they’ve updated the path a bit since the last time I looked. The path of totality is less than a mile from my house. (NE Indiana) I’ve already taken the day off from work, now I just have to get myself some eclipse glasses.
Oh I wish I had known about such plans, but my sister has already made reservations for us elsewhere, and we will make a couple of other stops to see things on the way. If the Dopefest goes on have fun from here in Kansas. We will be heading northeast.
Yeah, I’ll be in Cleveland, but as the saying goes, it’s tough to be optimistic with misty optics.
I’ve got tickets for a festival near Burnet TX, the same one mentioned by duality72 upthread I think. It’s an expensive coin flip, with the plane tickets and VIP camping, and only about 50% chance of clear skies. But there are a few bands playing that I’m interested in seeing, so it won’t be a total (heh) loss if it’s cloudy. I was considering going to Mazatlan, but the logistics seemed too difficult.
Just a reminder for those in or near the path of totality. You want to get to the center line. If you’re near the edge, the totality may only last a few seconds. At the center line, totality will last 4 minutes plus, so that’s where you want to be.
Good point. I’m planning on driving to a friend’s place which is further south and closer to the center line. We may drive further south still, which happens to take us into wine country. One of our favourite wineries has a great restaurant with a big deck overlooking the vineyards, which would be a wonderful place to watch the eclipse from. Of course, it will be overcast and raining that day, but I can dream! ![]()
A friend in Indiana lives within the area of totality and fairly close to the center. I plan to visit him.
I’ve seen several maps online that trace the path of totality, and where the center line is. At 4+ minutes this one will be longer lasting than 2017. That one was about 2:39 maximum.
I found on greatAmericanEclipse.com that it shows the moon’s shadow passing over locations. You can see comparisons between the path’s center and the path’s edge, to get a better sense as to how close to center line you want to be.
That’s right around where I plan to be. I’ll be based out of Seguin but will probably go a bit west for the actual eclipse.
Yes, a five minute drive will put me in the path but if I drive another half-hour or so I’ll get about 3 minutes of totality. I’m going to meet up with my cousin that day and we’ll decide how far we want to go.
