I have googled around a bit and found not much useful, so I thought maybe you guys could help… I am looking for some kinda statistics on the versions of MS Office (ie, 95, 97, 2000, xp) that are in use today?
It’s petty, but my biz partner wants to install Office 97 on all our machines here at work cos at least then everyone can share files, and we can all open RTF’s right? He also owns an office97 license for a bunch of machines.
Me, I’d like to use OfficeXP, cos it now is easily compatible with older versions of office, and has neat features.
But anyway, I’d love to know what others are using. Surely someone publishes this stat?
I’m not sure where you’ll be able to find those stats, but it may be more important to point out to your partner that, according to Microsoft’s website, Office 97 is no longer supported. That means no security patches, no service packs, no phone support, nothing. It’s rarely a good idea to install seven-year-old software that’s already considered obsolete.
The file-sharing argument doesn’t really fly, either. I’ve been distributing Word files created under Office XP for over a year, now, and the only person I’ve encountered who can’t open my files is using an ancient version of WordPerfect. Office 97 users seem to have no problems with the files. Even people using Word on Macs can open my files without trouble.
