USB/Autorun virus

I somehow picked this one up a while ago and although I don’t see any signs of trouble, I do still occasionally find the suspect folders on USB drives (Recycler, Recycle.bin etc. folders).

I use AVG 2011 all the time, and often run scans with Malwarebytes. My question is why neither of these two EVER detects the virus? The virus is not new, and the removal instructions seem fairly straight-forward, so why can neither of these do the job they’re meant to?

Autorun should ALWAYS be turned off. At most, you should be given the choice “what do you want to do with this inserted drive?” The first major virus was spread by boot sector on floppies accidentally leave it in while booting and it infected the ahrd drive too.

I think the pay version of Malwarebytes is supposed to. I only have the free, and it won’t even scan a USB drive.
