USB cable has to be unplugged and reinserted to restore internet connection

I have Clearwire and use thier modem. Sometime for no apparent reason the internet connection will stop working. This happens maybe twice a day. If I unplug the modems usb cable from the PC and reinsert it, the internet connection works again. I’m running windows xp.

What could be the solution to this strange problem?

Your USB ports may be going to sleep to save power. Could be a bad modem, if its a laptop you might not have sufficent power to the port.
