USB Keyboard Question

My wife had three keyboards go bad very quickly. After some troubleshooting, the only thing I could figure was the keyboard port was bad on the motherboard (ATX running Win 98).

I installed a schmancy USB keyboard and everything works fine.

The only thing I’ve noticed is that Win 98 has to come up first, before the USB port activates. This makes it impossible to boot into Safe Mode if needed. Is there a way to fix this, or is that just the way it is?

Any help would be appreciated.

go into system setup (on the first screen when you turn it on, usually hit del, f1, f2, something like that to enter the BIOS). There should be a field in there somewhere (integrated peripherals if you have that section) that will say USB kbd emulation, or something to that effect. make sure it is enabled. If you don’t have a ps/2 kbd to get into BIOS with, i really don’t have a suggestion.
