The sheer number of passwords I have to input on any given workday - not to mention the dozens I need for other sites - is of course insane. I suspect most Dopers are in a similar boat.
Been managing things sort of using something that will possibly become inaccessible. However I’m thinking it may be time to get a vault tool for my iPod Touch.
I use Wallet.
There’s no way I would be able to manage all my passwords without it, plus I store all my software serial numbers and credit card information in it.
It keeps all my machines (and my iPhone) in sync.
No, that’s too risky. You put the post-it note in the top right hand drawer on your desk, nobody ever looks there.
Or write it on the cardboard backing of your office calendar. Or the piece of cardboard behind the picture of your wife and/or kids that is on your desk.
People hate having to remember passwords and they are usually pretty easy to find.
They have versions for most devices, and I began using it on my Palm Treo many years ago, and I use it today on my iPhone.
Best part is, there is a desktop version that syncs with the iPhone version.
I don’t like 1Password much because its mission seems to be more dedicated to web login auto completion, while SplashID is more focused on storing stuff like your network login.
Maybe 1Password does that better now, but at one time it was darned near impossible to auto-generate a fresh password without actually having a web page involved in it.
I use Roboform, integrates nicely into both Firefox and IE, with many different versions that sync with each other pretty easily. And a free online storage setup for your stuff, that you can use to keep different computers synced. It costs a little for the full version, but I have found it to be more than worth the money.
I’ve been using Roboform for years. I’m used to it so I don’t plan to change. If I was starting out though, I’d probably choose LastPass of KeePass rather than pay $30 for Roboform. I’m very pleased though, with Roboform’s performance. I like that nowadays it even works with Opera.
Thanks all - I’ll check into these. Aside from SplashID and 1Password, I hadn’t heard of these. Free is nice but I have zero problem with paying for a tool that will be useful; the developers deserve something for their time anyway.
I’ve used Roboform for several years. Would recommend it. I also bought the Online version that you can access from any computer, but I haven’t used it on a remote computer yet.
