Use of moldy bread as anti-biotics

The ancients used a lot of natural remedies to combat conditions and diseases, such as belladonna and bark of that tree for aspirin. Did they even eat moldy bread or slap moldy bread over wounds as anti-biotics?

Since bacteria builds up resistance to anti-biotics, does moldy bread change it’s formula too to keep up?

Nope. Not all molds make antibiotics. And many of them make toxins that’ll kill you. So the odds aren’t good.

Resistance to antibiotics wasn’t as much of a problem back in the good ol’ days. Your average bacteria would be much less likely to run into them, so there wasn’t nearly as much selective pressure for adaption on either side. That said, I’d imagine you could probably put together an evolutionary tree based on antibiotic genes. If you really wanted to.

There was a thread on mold just this last week. It’s probably still up on page 4 or so of GQ. If not, search for it.
