Do like Norway, just get rid of honorifics all together. The closest we get are that some job titles that work similarly, like “professor”, “prime minister” and “crown princess”.
Well spoken. Having a daughter, this makes me very happy to hear.
I’ve known several people here whose colleagues addressed them as ‘Doctor ____’, because they did have a doctorate (not so common a thing as it is now). It’s a bit old-fashioned, though it did give you a chance to talk about ‘Doctor Pepper’ - because that was his name.
some higher Churchmen, particularly archbishops (C. of E., not Roman Candles), also get addressed as Doctor.
We had a graduate student whose parents threw a reception for him when he got his PhD. His father, who held an MD and was a professor in a medical school said to me, “Now we have a real doctor in the family.”
Actually the honorific I really prefer, when one is needed, is professor.
My formal education stopped at my MLS. That was hard. I have much respect for those who went further and achieved more. They worked hard for their degrees and if they want to be called Dr. Smith while I’m passing a joint, Dr. Smith it will be. Of course, if I’m hanging out smoking weed with someone, if he said just call me Asshole, I’d do that too because I’m also an Asshole.
Until that columnist called Dr. Jill Biden “kiddo” and scolded her for using a hard won doctorate title, she was Mrs. Biden in my mind. She will be DR. Biden forevermore.
