Using gender specific pejoratives in the Pit?

Outside of the Pit too. All of you deserve a warning.

And you, for junior moderating. :stuck_out_tongue:

…and now me, since accusing others of junior moderating is junior moderating.

Goldarn it!

We’re all agreed about this, including the Pit mods. There’s no rule on gender-specific pejoratives there. To my mind the guidelines were primarily written with MPSIMS and IMHO in mind. The comments that prompted this discussion are less common in other forums.

Actually, I did. It was you who didn’t quote anything at all, which made it seem like you were responding to what was immediately above your post.

If you say so, but it sure didn’t seem that way since your (unquoted) response immediately followed what I quoted, AND even more significantly, you also referred to “posting naked pics” which was part of his example when asking about moderation of sexism in the Pit, and had nothing whatsoever to do with double standards or the whole stupid “dick/cunt” thing.

But whatever… Communication Breakdown!

Ya see, tone is everything, I can’t tell if that’s a sincere apology or more mockery.

Well, gosh dang jeepers, that’s effed up.

Yeah, it’s junior modding all the way down.

There is not a double standard with respect to how moderation will be applied. If a guy calls a girl a “cunt” he will be modded. If a girl calls a guy a “cunt”, she will be modded. Etc ad nauseum.

There is a double standard with respect to the offensiveness of the terms “cunt” versus “dick”, whereby the female genetalia term has a different meaning and offensiveness level than the male genetalia term, but that is not exclusively a board double standard, rather one embedded in the mostly US expectation of those terms. YMMV. Of course the board moderation policy with respect to those terms is a board controlled issue, but the perceived offensiveness is not. The board policy is a(n over-) reaction to the perceived offensiveness.

Never called a woman (ex wife doesn’t count) a cunt. My buddies I call cunts all the time.

ETA: if you need to be calling ladies cunts, maybe you should hang with a better class o women.

Board policies need to have a connection to the things that are actually happening on the board. Some people have complained that this new policy is based on a double standard in that it appears to only be directed at male posters.

But Enginerd posted a list of examples of male posters making off-topic sexual remarks. People generally agreed these posts were offensive. Then I asked if anyone could produce an equivalent list of examples made by female posters. And no one did.

So this policy enforcement is gender neutral in that it applies equally to both men and women. But it’s directed at men to the degree that men appear to have been the only ones that were breaking it.

“The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich and the poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.”

I dunno, this post wasn’t off topic per se, but I found it a lot more offensive than most of the ‘pics or it didn’t happen’ type.

You guys! This is the most NSFW thread EVER. Did we end up in a J.D. Salinger novel? (I once counted 17 ‘‘fucks’’ on one page)

That was pretty damn offensive. I’m guessing it wasn’t moderated because it was technically trying to be answer to the OPs question. Sort of like how someone can start a thread about the racial achievement gap and some idiot starts ranting about The Bell Curve and they don’t get modded.

This wasn’t so great either:

Although the latter person was obviously a troll, and I think the first quote was intended as a serious answer.

Either way, what the fuck is up with all the sexism on this board? You would think men and women in meatspace would be at each other’s throats constantly with the way some of our posters carry on. I dunno about you, but these issues rarely if ever come up IRL.

Obviously it’s stupid that the word ‘‘cunt’’ is banned. I’ve personally never found it particularly offensive, but I can’t deny there really isn’t a male equivalent. The closest I can come up with is ‘‘bastard.’’ That’s what my Mom called all her boyfriends when she was pissed off at them. Maybe the subjective offensiveness of words is dictated by what our Moms called people they were pissed off at.

Why are you singling out the guys?

:stuck_out_tongue: I keed…

It wasn’t reported. I can’t find any reports from that thread.

Well, I wasn’t saying it should have been moderated, per se, just offering it as a response to the claims of ‘what misandry’.

Are you saying it would have been moderated had it been reported? I figure racists can get away with saying a whole awful lot in the context of ‘‘debate’’ so it stands to reason that sexists (on both sides) would get the same leniency.

I would object to curbing such language in GD. Plus I found the argument refreshing and not incidentally amusing. The poster in question also didn’t keep re-posting the same 'ol drivel either which also earns points. Frankly, such attacks on the dominant group in our non-matriarchal society don’t really bend me out of shape. Kicking somebody when they’re down, OTOH, is a separate matter. Yeah it’s a separate standard for a different context: so what? I’m a guy: I can handle it. Not that anyone of character couldn’t handle an identical situation.

Also to be clear, there was the distinct whiff of parody in the quote.

If you like, but I didn’t percieve it that way. More to the point, ‘it was a joke’ has been pretty much rejected in the other threads on this topic.
