Lindows uses a chopped-up WINES set, I believe, that will give you limited access to Win32 apps. I mean limited: Office, and that is about it, I believe.
If *nix intrigues you, just do it up right, and go Linux or BSD. Heck, you can get low-end Sun Blade workstations for sub-$1k.
