The USS Gravely (DDG 107), the navy’s newest guided missile destroyer, is being commissioned at this time in Wilmington, NC. Named after Samuel E. Gravely, the first African-American to become: a US Naval officer, ship captain, a Vice Admiral, and a fleet commander in his 38-year career. His 88-year-old widow christened the ship and is in attendance at today’s ceremony, along with the Chief of Naval Operations, Adm. Gary Roughead.
