I’ve noticed that the usual answer for medical questions is “go see a doctor now” What would be the response for someone who can’t afford a doctor?
I think it’s “Go see a doctor and figure out how to pay for it later.”
Seriously, there is medical care for the indigent. It might not be great, but it does exist.
There are programs for low-cost health care for indigent people.
Depending on your income, you might be eligible for Medicaid. This is a state- and federally-funded health insurance program that takes income into account.
In Texas, there are county-provided programs for people who don’t have work-provided insurance but who make too much for Medicaid.
I also notice that you are in Lubbock, home of Texas Tech Health Sciences Center. Many university-affiliated clinics provide health care for those who can’t afford to see a doctor. According to this page, patients without insurance or ability to pay will be interviewed by a financial representative with an eye toward determining eligibility for assistance. In my experience, a patient will not be turned away from a teaching facility because they are poor.
So, there you go.
